Traveling with Children in Thailand

·

Thailand captivates families with its pristine beaches, breathtaking national parks, lush countryside, and warm local hospitality, offering invaluable tips for traveling peacefully with your children.

Thailand may well be the most family-friendly destination in Southeast Asia. With its paradisiacal beaches, spectacular national parks, verdant countryside, and genuinely welcoming local population, the Kingdom of Siam has everything to delight both young and old. Any Thailand itinerary can easily be tailored for children. Cycling through the countryside, experiences with elephants at sanctuaries (never riding on their backs!), exploring underwater worlds through snorkeling—activities abound!

Health and Safety in Thailand

Thailand is a relatively safe country. The population prides itself on its warm and welcoming reputation, and will invariably greet families with genuine smiles and kindness. Although no vaccinations are mandatory for traveling to Thailand, it is strongly recommended to ensure that vaccinations for both you and your children are up to date. You can consult the list of recommended vaccines on our page: Health and Vaccines in Thailand. Stray dogs are fairly common in Thailand and, while often very friendly, it's best to discourage your children from petting them. Rabies is still present in the country, and we can never be entirely certain of an animal's reaction. With private hospitals (costly) and public hospitals (very affordable), Thailand offers good quality healthcare services. Still, it's advisable to invest in comprehensive travel insurance, as food poisoning or car accidents can happen. Another potential hazard in Thailand: mosquitoes. Be sure to protect your children from mosquitoes, especially prevalent in the late afternoon. Dengue fever is a disease present in Thailand transmitted through mosquito bites. It manifests like severe flu and can be quite dangerous for young children.

Essential Items to Pack When Traveling with Children

When preparing your luggage for a family vacation, certain items must not be forgotten.

  • A first aid kit with all basic medications, as well as child-appropriate remedies such as liquid paracetamol.
  • Liquid hand sanitizer to clean hands before each meal.
  • Baby wipes.
  • A few items to keep children entertained during travel (colored pencils and coloring books, card games, etc.).
  • Don't forget comfort items like stuffed animals and pacifiers if needed.
  • Insect repellent and lightweight long-sleeved clothing.
  • Hat or cap + sunscreen.
  • UV-protective rash guard or swimsuit for beach stays.

Dining in Thailand with Children

Thai cuisine is renowned as some of the world's finest. However, it can sometimes be quite spicy and may not always suit the youngest palates. No need to worry—restaurants are now accustomed to foreign tourists and are happy to prepare dishes without spices. Children also particularly enjoy noodle-based dishes like Pad Thai or fried rice. At markets, you'll easily find delicious chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce—children absolutely love them. Thailand also offers numerous sweet, exotic fruits. Children will be delighted to enjoy a crisp watermelon, dragon fruit, juicy pineapple, or small bananas for an afternoon snack.

Getting Around Thailand with Children

Thailand offers numerous transportation options. Children will love exploring the city aboard a tuk-tuk. It's fun, affordable, and often feels adventurous. Trains, whether day or night services, are relatively comfortable and spacious, well-suited for family travel. To reach the islands, various boat types are available, and children will enjoy the crossings and may even spot dolphins playing in the waves. Sawa Discovery is experienced in arranging stays with children of all ages. We will adapt itineraries, activities, and transportation methods according to your specific needs.
