The best way to travel around Laos is to rent a car with a driver. This allows you to explore every corner of the country safely. Hiring a driver is strongly recommended, as they know the roads, dangers, driving habits, and local language. However, it is also possible to rent a car without a driver.

Flying is the fastest way to travel within Laos. Road conditions are generally very poor, meaning it can take around nine hours to cover 400 kilometers, for example. Even though a few major roads are paved, most are dirt roads and are often partially destroyed during the rainy season.
For this reason, traveling by plane between major cities is easier, especially if you are short on time.

Buses are the most common means of transportation for locals in Laos. For long journeys, choose the VIP class for more comfort and safety. Buses are often in poor condition and crowded, but they offer great opportunities for meeting people.
