Visiting Kanchanaburi, what to expect?

Located near the Myanmar border, just 2 to 3 hours from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is a pleasant town that appeals for its natural setting and tragic history, with the famous Bridge over the River Kwai.

What to see and do in Kanchanaburi?

Diving into history

A true symbol of World War II, the Bridge over the River Kwai is undoubtedly the region's most iconic site. Made famous worldwide by the success of Pierre Boulle's novel and its film adaptation by David Lean, this bridge is an iconic monument of profound emotional significance, demanding reverence.

As a reminder, the Bridge over the River Kwai was part of 250 km of railway built in the 1940s by the Japanese to connect Thailand to Myanmar. Built in just a few months by prisoners of war and Asian workers under appalling conditions, the railway cost the lives of nearly 100,000 workers and approximately 12,000 prisoners. These tragic events earned it the nickname "Death Railway."

Despite several bombings, the Bridge over the River Kwai and railway have since been restored. Today, you can walk along the Hellfire Pass trail, the railway's deadliest section. This 4 km memorial path leads to the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum. You can also board the Death Railway tourist train, which will take you through surrounding landscapes of mountains, rice paddies, and countryside.

It's difficult to choose when both destinations deserve a visit. If it's your first trip to Thailand and you want to see as much as possible without traveling great distances, we recommend choosing Chiang Mai due to its variety of activities.

On the other hand, we suggest Kanchanaburi for travelers daring enough to venture off the beaten path. Beyond the main tourist sites (like the Bridge over the River Kwai and Erawan Falls), it's easier to avoid crowds.

Rather than having to choose, why not visit both? By taking a bus, you can reach both destinations in 11 hours. We recommend taking an overnight bus to avoid losing a day.
