Yoga retreats and meditation are part of the intangible cultural heritage of northern Thailand. Its lush landscapes and flowing waters make it a serene and idyllic place to rejuvenate for a few days. Chiang Mai Province welcomes a large number of these retreats, which operate year-round. Tourists come to learn relaxation postures and personal development techniques.
Different Types of Retreat
In the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai, you'll find retreats of varying lengths, ranging from three to twelve days, offering different forms of yoga and meditation learning and practice.
Short Retreats:
Even for short retreats, a structured program is in place so you have the opportunity to explore multiple disciplines, each designed to bring you back into harmony with yourself.
Among the activities typically offered, you'll find:
- Yoga sessions
- Meditation and mindfulness sessions
- Thai massage
- Free bicycle access
- Yoga equipment provided
Moreover, certain services are provided to make your stay as pleasant and restful as possible:
- Round-trip airport transfers from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)

Regarding meals, some retreat centers include them in their packages, while others don't. Meals are more commonly included for longer stays (more than 5 days). At each retreat center, you'll have the option to choose vegetarian or vegan dishes.
Long Retreats:
Like short retreats, longer retreats offer a slightly more diverse range of activities but, most importantly, significantly more course hours than shorter retreats:
- More yoga classes
- Numerous meditation sessions both indoors and outdoors
- Massages and spa sessions
- Introduction to multiple yoga styles: hatha; yin; restorative; nidra
- Temple visits and exploration of Chiang Mai and/or Pai
- Depending on the season, participation in events such as the Festival of Lights or the Flower Festival in Chiang Mai.
In terms of services, you'll find the same accommodations as those offered during shorter retreats.
Things to Know
Certain aspects of these retreats may be worth considering and could influence your choice:
- Some retreats serve only vegetarian meals
- Depending on your choice of retreat, you might practice a single yoga style and thus not explore all the other styles
- Remember to bring bath towels, as toiletries are not always provided
- Some facilities welcome only one group at a time, while others, typically larger ones, accommodate multiple groups simultaneously. Be aware that depending on the retreat, you may find yourself with people you don't know who will participate in yoga classes alongside you.
