The Different Types of Buses for Getting Around Thailand

There are several types of buses in Thailand:

Public Buses

Also called local buses, public buses connect towns and villages within the same province or between neighboring provinces. Making short journeys, these are not buses that traverse the country. They make numerous stops along their route and are not the most comfortable. Public buses are the most economical for short distances. Generally, you can purchase tickets at the station or directly on the bus.

Why travel by public bus?

As you've gathered, public buses are best for very short distances on a tight budget. It's also the best way to travel with locals since they're very popular among residents.

Express Buses

Express buses are part of the inter-provincial bus fleet. In other words, unlike public buses, they cover long distances. Despite what their name suggests, they aren't the fastest buses. Indeed, they make several stops at bus stations or even roadside to pick up passengers.

However, they are far more comfortable than local buses. They typically have reclining seats, toilets and air conditioning. Some companies even provide snacks or meal vouchers. In any case, they stop at service stations to let you stretch your legs and stock up on refreshments.

VIP Buses

VIP buses are long-haul buses serving all provinces of the country. As their name suggests, VIP buses are the most comfortable. Featuring rows of 3 wide, reclining seats, they offer more space and legroom. They're equipped with toilets and air conditioning and provide numerous services included in the price (snack, water, meals, blanket and pillow…). Depending on the company, some even have screens, power outlets and USB ports.

Unlike other bus types, VIP buses make very few stops, making them the fastest buses. Given their amenities, they're the most expensive buses, though they remain ultra-affordable.

Again, you can opt for a night bus journey to save time during your trip.

Why travel by VIP bus?

VIP buses are the fastest and most comfortable. Although slightly more expensive than other bus types, they're the best option for long journeys and/or nighttime travel.

Minivans

To reach Thailand's tourist destinations, you can take a minivan. These small vans are much faster than buses since they make no stops and usually allow you to reach your final destination directly (your hotel, for example).

However, this type of transport is notorious for being the most dangerous (due to drivers' "sporty" driving) and less comfortable (you may be cramped with luggage to save space). For this reason, we don't recommend minivans unless you're making short trips.
