This itinerary will allow you to discover among the most beautiful landscapes of Écosse. The Isle of Arran is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and represents Écosse in miniature thanks to the great variety of its landscapes (jagged coastlines, mountains, forests). The Argyll & Bute region attracts with the gentleness of its landscapes. You will visit the very beautiful town of Oban and its distillery of the same name. Finally, your journey will take you to the Trossachs National Park and the region of Loch Lomond.

Along the road, let yourself be seduced by charming fishing villages, castles steeped in history and panoramas where peaceful lochs, verdant hills and wild shores blend together. This region, less frequented than the Highlands, reveals an authentic Écosse, where Celtic traditions and local legends are still very much alive. Between ferry crossings, whisky tastings and accessible hikes, this journey offers a perfect balance between cultural discoveries, preserved nature and Scottish gentleness of life.

Day-by-day itinerary
Arrival at Edinburgh or Glasgow airport and departure to the island of Arran
Île d'Arran → Ardrossan
Upon your arrival at Edinburgh airport (or Glasgow) you pick up your rental vehicle.
Without further delay, you head southwest towards Ardrossan, a small seaside town on the Firth of Clyde.
Applecross → Brodick
You will then embark for Brodick, on the Isle of Arran (50 minutes crossing).
Brodick → Île d'Arran
This human-sized island is a jewel. It can be easily discovered on foot or by bike. You will enjoy the splendour of the landscapes, between fine sand and pebble beaches, secluded coves, lush mountains. Beautiful hike of a few hours possible at Glen Rosa.
2 nights on the island will allow you to fully enjoy this stopover.
On the Island of Arran
Day trip on this oval-shaped island. You can tour it in either direction. To see:
The Brodick Castle and its magnificent gardens, once owned by the Dukes of Arran.
The ruined castle of Lochranza, in the north of the island. It is said to have inspired Hergé for his Tintin album "The Black Island".
Arran Museum, which, despite its outdated appearance, is very interesting. It traces the history of the island's inhabitants and is composed of contributions and donations from islanders.
Arran Distillery, in Lochranza, which dates from 1995. The guides are passionate and will know how to make you appreciate their local whisky.
Also worth seeing are a few archaeological sites, notably the Machrie Moor site.

Argyll and Bute Region
Île d'Arran → Lochranza
Route to Lochranza, in the north of the Isle of Arran.
Lochranza → Claonaig
From there, a short ferry ride will take you to Claonaig, gateway to the Argyll & Bute region.
Claonaig → Lochgilphead
You will drive up part of the Kintyre peninsula. Be warned, the roads are very narrow and only allow space for one vehicle. You will experience the "passing places" (areas on the side of the road where you can park to let oncoming cars pass). It's an experience to live!
Our advice: follow the small road that goes around the Knapdale peninsula for stunning views of the islands of Jura and Islay. You will almost certainly only encounter Scottish cattle and sheep!
Recommended stop at Lochgilphead for lunch.
Argyll and Bute Region
Why not set off today to discover an island? From Oban, it's possible to take a day trip to the island of Mull, Iona, Staffa or the small island of Kerrera, which can be explored on foot in a few hours.
If you prefer to stay on land, the surroundings of Oban are full of discoveries: castles, gardens, villages, forests. Argyll is an ideal region for observing birds (puffins), seals, otters…

From Oban to the Trossachs Region
After your breakfast, you will head towards the village of Inveraray, on the western shore of Loch Fyne. It is a former royal village (it was the residence of the Dukes of Argyll). Along the way, you will pass through charming typical villages. You will travel along the northern part of Loch Awe and then Loch Fyne (lunch stop recommended at "Loch Fyne Seafood & grill").
Then you will travel along other mountains and drive on other winding roads to access the region of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park
The park covers 25,000 hectares. The Loch Lomond is one of the most beautiful lochs in the country. It regularly displays magnificent colours. You can walk around it to admire the reflections of the mountains on the water.
The three main ports of the Loch are Luss, a charming and flower-filled village offering lovely walks, Balloch and Balmaha, starting point for hiking and notably the Conic Hill trail. Possibility of taking a boat excursion on the Loch.

From the Trossachs to Edinburgh or Glasgow
Arrochar → Stirling
Our advice: from Arrochar, head north to cross the Trossachs National Park. Hidden in its heart are two lovely little Lochs: Loch Voil and Loch Earn, which you can reach via very small roads.
Stop in Stirling, the main town in the Trossachs region. You can visit the impressive medieval castle.

The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and Canada traveling to Scotland for a tourist stay. As entry rules may change, we recommend verifying the information with the official authorities before your departure.
Passport
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. To enter, nationals of the EEA and Switzerland must be in possession of a valid passport for the entire duration of the stay. Since Brexit, the national identity card is no longer accepted as a travel document to the United Kingdom for the vast majority of travelers.
Canadian nationals must also present a valid passport for the duration of the stay.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).
Tourist stay without visa
Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada benefit from a visa exemption for tourist stays in the United Kingdom.
This exemption allows a stay of up to 6 months on British territory. It is not possible to extend this stay from within the United Kingdom beyond this duration for a tourist stay.
British authorities may request:
an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of the stay,
proof of accommodation (hotel reservation, invitation, etc.).
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Since the beginning of 2025, the United Kingdom has implemented the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a mandatory electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, including citizens of the EEA, Switzerland, and Canada.
The ETA must be obtained before departure and is electronically linked to the traveler's passport. It allows multiple entries to British territory and is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The application is made online via the application or official website of the British government.

Minors must be holders of their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.
In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Concerned travelers should inquire with the embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom in their country of residence.
