After breathing in the splendid Trossachs National Park, you will head back up to the Highlands via Glencoe. You will explore the enchanting landscape of the Isle of Skye before reaching the mythical Loch Ness. You will taste the local spirit in the whisky valley and walk through the castles of Perthshire.
A loop full of discoveries that will give you time to escape to the heart of Écosse!

Arrival in Edinburgh - Trossachs National Park
Édimbourg → Callander
Upon your arrival you take possession of your rental vehicle.
Head west towards the Trossachs National Park. You will discover the first Highlands. The park covers 25,000 hectares. At its heart lies the Loch Lomond, one of the most beautiful in the country. You can tour it. The main town in the region is Stirling, where you can visit the impressive medieval castle.
Overnight in the heart of Trossachs National Park, near Callander.

Callander → Callander
A day dedicated to discovering the region. You will be able to visit Stirling, a small medieval town with cobbled streets and its famous castle overlooking the valley. The region is a major site of battles between Écosse and England and the spirit of William Wallace still lingers there.
In the afternoon, you can venture around Loch Lomond, and, if weather permits, take a boat trip there. The colours will certainly enchant you. The village of Luss, on the western shore of the Loch is very pretty but quite touristy. Prefer Balmaha, on the other shore, where you can board for the island of Inchcailloch or stroll through the forest park.

From the Trossachs to Fort William
Callander → Glencoe
Departure for the West of Écosse and the Highlands region. You will cross the Valley of Glencoe, a former glacial valley, famous for the massacre of Clan MacDonald in 1692 by Clan Campbell on the orders of the King of England. Take the opportunity to do a little hiking, the landscapes there are so magical.
You then continue on towards Fort William.
On the way to Fort William, you will catch a glimpse of Ben Nevis, the country's highest peak (1345 metres). It is an unmissable destination for hikers.
The Fort William region has served as a filming location for many films such as Harry Potter or Skyfall. You can also follow the Jacobite train route (Harry Potter train) between Glenfinnan and Mallaig.
Discovery of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula
Escape off the beaten path on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. After crossing the Loch Linnhe south of Fort William, you will take a small ferry. This will probably be your first kilometres driving on single tracks, single-lane roads winding through sumptuous valleys. Nature reigns here. You may spot deer, otters and seals on the coastline (mainly at low tide). From the coast, you will enjoy spectacular viewpoints over the Outer Hebrides.
Return towards Fort William. Possibility to stop at the Neptune Steps, a series of 8 locks built on the Caledonian Canal to facilitate boat traffic between the Atlantic and the North Sea.
From Fort William to the Isle of Skye
Fort William → Mallaig
Head to Mallaig, from where you will embark towards the majestic Isle of Skye. The journey from Fort William to Mallaig follows the Jacobite train route which you may have the opportunity to see pass by. You can position yourself at the foot of the Glenfinnan viaduct to enjoy a breathtaking view. The viaduct was erected in 1815 in honour of soldiers who died for the Jacobite cause.
Mallaig → Armadale
The ferry journey between Mallaig and Armadale is a journey within a journey. It offers a superb panorama of the Inner Hebrides islands, of which Skye is the jewel. Its name in Gaelic means the Island of Mist. You will glimpse the imposing Cuillin Hills and then arrive at the charming fishing port of Portree. A stroll will allow you to soak up the atmosphere of this wonderful island.
Discovery of the Isle of Skye
Talisker → Dunvegan
You can then continue exploring Skye towards Dunvegan in the North-West of the island. Visit the castle and its gardens.
Île de Skye → Talisker
After your breakfast, head to the Talisker distillery. You will learn about the production process of this world-renowned whisky. Talisker sources its water, naturally filtered through peat, from 21 underground springs located on a nearby hill. A small tasting at the end of the tour.
Dunvegan → Neist Point
Unless you prefer the wild side of Neist Point, where cetaceans sometimes frolic. It is possible to organize a boat trip, on request.
From Skye to Inverness
Île de Skye → Kyle of Lochalsh
Leave the Isle of Skye by taking the road to Kyle of Lochalsh and crossing the bridge connecting Skye to mainland Écosse. It was built in 1995.
On the way, stop at Eilean Donan castle to take some photos. It was notably here that a large part of the film Highlander was filmed.
Kyle of Lochalsh → Inverness
Follow the road to Fort Augustus to travel along the loch Ness on its western shore. You will stop at Urquhardt Castle before reaching the Inverness region.
Inverness and the Moray region
Cultural capital of the Highlands, Inverness is a lively city without being hectic. As you head towards the Moray Firth, north of Inverness, you can make a detour to the Glenmorangie distillery where a very good single malt is produced which has the highest stills in Scotland.
With its romantic Highland landscapes, Moray is the ideal stopover to stay between land and sea, in complete peace and quiet. You can even observe a colony of dolphins that have made their home in the estuary.

From Inverness to Perthshire
After your breakfast, head towards Grantown-On-Spey. Home to more than half of the country's single malt distilleries, the Speyside region is nicknamed the whisky valley. You'll find the greatest brands there such as Aberlour, Cardhu, Glenfiddich, or Macallan.
You will then cross the Grampian Mountains (or Central Highlands). Recommended stop at the village of Ballater where shops have displayed royal coats of arms on their storefronts. This makes it the only "royal" village in Écosse. The Queen's Castle, Balmoral Castle, is located just a few kilometres away.

The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and Canada traveling to Scotland for a tourist stay. As entry rules may change, we recommend verifying the information with the official authorities before your departure.
Passport
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. To enter, nationals of the EEA and Switzerland must be in possession of a valid passport for the entire duration of the stay. Since Brexit, the national identity card is no longer accepted as a travel document to the United Kingdom for the vast majority of travelers.
Canadian nationals must also present a valid passport for the duration of the stay.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).
Tourist stay without visa
Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada benefit from a visa exemption for tourist stays in the United Kingdom.
This exemption allows a stay of up to 6 months on British territory. It is not possible to extend this stay from within the United Kingdom beyond this duration for a tourist stay.
British authorities may request:
an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of the stay,
proof of accommodation (hotel reservation, invitation, etc.).
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Since the beginning of 2025, the United Kingdom has implemented the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a mandatory electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, including citizens of the EEA, Switzerland, and Canada.
The ETA must be obtained before departure and is electronically linked to the traveler's passport. It allows multiple entries to British territory and is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The application is made online via the application or official website of the British government.

Minors must be holders of their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.
In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the territory may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Concerned travelers should inquire with the embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom in their country of residence.
