Is it safe to travel to Egypt?
A large part of Egypt remains accessible to travelers in enhanced vigilance zones. Only certain regions of Sinai and the western desert are strongly advised against by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Areas discouraged for travelers
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally advises against:
- The Sinai region (except Sharm El-Sheikh accessible by plane only)
- The western region of the country covered by the Sahara Desert
These areas present risks related to terrorist groups, smuggling and anti-personnel mines.
Areas under heightened alert
The rest of Egypt, including Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Nile Valley, remains accessible by taking enhanced precautions. Major tourist sites benefit from particular security measures.
Exception: Sharm El-Sheikh
This beach resort in southern Sinai remains practicable if access is made exclusively by plane and without leaving the city.
Key points to remember
Regularly consult the France Diplomatie website before departure for the latest security updates and take out appropriate travel insurance.
