Wat Phra Kaeo

Wat Phra Kaeo in Chiang Rai is a relatively traditional temple. Its fame stems from once housing the legendary Emerald Buddha statue. The statue lay concealed within the chedi and was discovered by chance when the temple's stupa was struck by lightning in 1434. In 1784, the statue was transferred to Bangkok, where it has resided within the grounds of the Royal Palace ever since—specifically in the sanctuary of Wat Phra Si Ratana Sasadaram, more commonly known as the Wat Phra Kaeo of Bangkok.
