Wat Rong Khun (White Temple)

If you were to see only one, it would be this one. Indeed, the Wat Rong Khun has made the city famous and is unlike any other with its immaculate white structure. Better known as the "White Temple," it is the creation of architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, who undertook its construction at his own expense. Although considered a sacred site, it is designed to house works of art: you'll find Buddha statues, murals depicting theravada Buddhist doctrines, and statues of pop culture icons like Michael Jackson!

Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple)

Located in the heart of the village of the same name, north of the Thai city of Chiang Rai, the Wat Rong Sua Ten is among the must-see temples in the region. Like its counterpart, it was built on the ruins of an old temple. It was the disciple of architect Chalermchai who undertook its construction. Nicknamed the "Blue Temple" because of the distinctive midnight blue color that covers both its exterior and interior facades, its architecture stands out from typical temples.

Wat Huay Pla Kang

Wat Huay Pla Kang is among the most beautiful temples in Chiang Rai. Known as the "9-level temple," it is characterized by a 9-story pagoda dominating the valley and an impressive 100-meter-tall white Buddha statue. In fact, this is not a Buddha statue but rather a representation of Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion. It's possible to climb to the top of the statue's head to enjoy an exceptional panorama of the region. It's worth noting that the temple was built to help children, and it houses a hospital and orphanage.

Wat Phra Kaeo

Wat Phra Kaeo in Chiang Rai is a relatively traditional temple. It is known to all because it once housed the famous Emerald Buddha statue. This statue was kept inside the chedi and was discovered by chance when the temple's stupa was struck by lightning in 1434. In 1784, the statue was transferred to Bangkok and has since been housed within the Bangkok Royal Palace, specifically in the sanctuary of Wat Phra Si Ratana Sasadaram, better known as the Wat Phra Kaeo of Bangkok. Wat Klang Wiang

Wat Klang Wiang is one of the most beautiful temples in downtown Chiang Rai. Renowned for its sublime ornaments, elephant figures, and Buddha statues, the temple is a perfect representation of Lanna-style temples. Although temple construction probably dates back to the 15th century, most of the structures were built in the 20th century. Indeed, a violent storm damaged a large part of the temple in 1903, which necessitated extensive reconstructions afterward.

Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong

Located on a small hill near the old city, Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is one of the oldest temples in Chiang Rai. Legend has it that the temple existed even before Chiang Rai itself. According to the Yonok Chronicle, the That or Chedi was built in 940 during the reign of Phraya Ruen Kaew, prince of Chiang Rai. It was designed to house relics of Lord Buddha. Moreover, what makes this temple extraordinary is not so much its appearance but rather its symbolic character.

Wat Tham Phra

Located on the banks of the Kok River, Wat Tham Phra is a complex carved into the cliffs themselves. Within you'll find temples built into caves: Tham Ku Kaeo, Tham Pla, and Wat Tham Pla. During your visit, you may encounter many macaques, bats, and sacred fish. The rocky setting and natural surroundings give this sacred place a peaceful atmosphere that will appeal to travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.
