Can't decide between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan? We'll walk you through all the distinctive features and attractions of these two islands in the Gulf of Thailand to help you make the right choice and plan your Thailand trip.
Visiting Koh Tao, What to Expect?

Lost in the heart of the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao is a small island of just 21 km². Characterized by lush forest and paradisiacal beaches, the island feels cut off from the rest of the world.
What to See and Do on Koh Tao?
Relaxation and Beach Time
With its pristine beaches, Koh Tao is the ideal destination to bask in the sun by the water. Boasting some luxury hotels nestled in nature, the island also attracts honeymooners seeking a high-end getaway at accessible prices.
Diving, Snorkeling, and Freediving
But what makes Koh Tao famous worldwide are primarily its exceptional marine ecosystems.
Indeed, the island is surrounded by over 8 km of coral reefs, home to a wealth of tropical fish (barracuda, triggerfish, clownfish, snappers, angelfish, butterflyfish, batfish, filefish, groupers...). The reefs also shelter sea turtles (hawksbill and green sea turtles), and with a bit of luck, you may spot whale sharks and blacktip reef sharks.
A true natural aquarium, Koh Tao is therefore a diver's, snorkeler's, and freediver's paradise.
Good to know: for travelers looking to gain certifications, Koh Tao is renowned for offering training courses (PADI, SSI) among the most affordable in the world.
Water Sports
Other must-do activities on Koh Tao: water sports. Wakeboarding, paddleboarding, tubing, kitesurfing (depending on season), kayaking... There are plenty of activities to get your adrenaline pumping while enjoying the island's natural treasures!
Hiking
With its verdant jungle and gentle hills, Koh Tao offers some excellent hikes to venture into the heart of nature. Most trails reward hikers with stunning views of the island and the endless sea...
Koh Tao, for Which Types of Travelers?
Home to some of Thailand's best diving spots, Koh Tao is a premier diving destination. But the island appeals to more than just divers—it's also perfect for those seeking to escape the world or embark on a honeymoon. Whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, with friends, or as a family, everyone will find something to enjoy!
Visiting Koh Phangan, What to Expect?

Located between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, Koh Phangan is a mystical island covering 125 km². It can be divided into two distinct areas: the south, where backpackers and party-goers congregate, and the west and north, where nature and tranquility reign supreme.
What to See and Do on Koh Phangan?
Beach Relaxation
Untouched sand, turquoise and crystal-clear waters, swaying palms and lush jungle as a backdrop... The island's beaches all look like postcard scenes where you'll want to laze for hours. Among Koh Phangan's most beautiful beaches, don't miss Bottle Beach or Haad Tian, two unspoiled stretches accessible only by hiking or boat.
Parties and Festivals
Famous worldwide, the Full Moon Party takes place every month during each full moon on Haad Rin Beach in the island's south. This event, which contributed to Koh Phangan's tourism boom, has led to a proliferation of parties and festivals. To such an extent that there's hardly an evening (in high season) without an organized gathering on the island. Expect electronic, trance, reggae, rock, disco nights... There's something for every musical taste!
Hiking
Beyond its paradisiacal beaches, Koh Phangan is also home to lush jungle and beautiful waterfalls. With more than half of the island's area designated as a "National Park," the island has maintained its wild character while preserving its natural environment.
Travelers in search of hiking will easily find their ideal trail. Among the hikes to do on Koh Phangan, we recommend the Khao Ra trail, which leads to the island's highest point (630 m altitude) and rewards you with exceptional panoramic views.
Scuba Diving
Although Koh Tao is THE diving destination in the Gulf of Thailand, it's entirely possible to dive from Koh Phangan. Most diving centers take their clients to Sail Rock, a massive rock formation rising from the sea, renowned for its incredible schools of fish. Above all, it's one of Thailand's best diving spots to see whale sharks.
Note: Sail Rock is equally accessible from Koh Tao, Koh Phangan (and even Koh Samui).
Yoga
With its positive energy, Koh Phangan attracts a substantial community of yoga enthusiasts. It's particularly on the island's west coast, toward the hippie village of Srithanu, that you'll find numerous yoga centers of all kinds.
Koh Phangan, for Which Types of Travelers?
As you've gathered, Koh Phangan has something to captivate many travelers: party-goers, backpackers, divers, yoga practitioners, athletes, couples, families...
In Summary: Which Island to Choose? Koh Phangan or Koh Tao: How to Choose?
Given their characteristics, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao share many similarities, making the choice less than obvious.
The only differences? Though both are human-scaled, Koh Tao can easily be explored on foot, unlike Koh Phangan where it's better to rent a scooter. Additionally, you should choose Koh Phangan if you want to diversify your activities. Conversely, if you simply want to take it easy and dive, you can stick to Koh Tao alone.
And rather than having to choose, why not do both? By taking a ferry, you can make the crossing and reach both islands in just one hour!
