A Glimpse into History
The history of Ban Khok Kong Phu Thai traces back to 1889, when residents of Khao Hey and Nong Sung in Mukdahan Province set out on a journey eastward. Led by Mr. Upphachai, two families comprising 19 people established themselves east of the present-day location of Khok Kong, naming their new home Ban Thung Bok Tao. Roughly two years later, the Kula tribe also arrived in the region. They brought opium with them, and their reputation for danger and criminal activity stirred unrest among the villagers, forcing them to return to Ban Khao Hey for safety. Meanwhile, the Kula tribe was eventually scattered.
In 1906, the inhabitants of Khao Hey resettled Thung Bok Tao and renamed it "Ban Khok Kong." However, a mysterious epidemic struck and caused unexplained illnesses and deaths. This prompted the villagers to relocate northward, where they remain today.
Today, the residents of Khok Kong are Thai people deeply committed to preserving their local traditions, including their language, clothing, food, customs, and culture.
