As part of efforts to combat Covid-19, and following changes to travel rules to and from abroad issued by the interior ministry and in effect since December 4, 2021, travelers returning to France from Thailand are required to present a negative PCR or antigen test less than 48 hours old.

Getting an Antigen Test in Thailand

Our first piece of advice is to choose an antigen test. Faster and less expensive than a PCR test, it will be your best ally in overcoming this new health requirement.

Antigen Tests at the Pharmacy

Antigen test kits are available at pharmacies for a modest sum of 300 THB (around 8 euros), but unfortunately the pharmacist will not be able to provide you with a certificate in English that will allow you to board your flight.

This option is best used only for self-testing in case of doubt.

Antigen Tests at the Hospital

To obtain the essential document, you'll need to visit a hospital where a doctor can issue you a certificate of non-contamination from Covid following your antigen test. While processing times remain quick (15-20 minutes), the cost is slightly higher than tests found in pharmacies (500 THB, or about 13 euros).

Getting a PCR Test in Thailand

Since December 4, anyone 12 years or older wishing to return to France from Thailand must have a negative PCR test performed at least 48 hours before departure. It is therefore essential for any traveler to be tested before returning.

In Thailand, it is possible to take a PCR test at all hospitals and clinics throughout the country. There's no need to return to Bangkok if your stay is ending in Chiang Mai or Phuket, for example.

PCR tests normally cost 2000 Baht (54 euros) for results within 12 hours, and 3900 Baht (105 euros) for results within 6 hours. You also have the option of obtaining results within 3 hours at private clinics.

Before returning to France, you must also complete a signed declaration stating that you have no symptoms and have not been in contact with anyone who has contracted Covid-19. The declaration also serves as your authorization for a PCR test to be performed upon your arrival in France. The declaration is the same for all travelers from countries in the Orange zone, such as Thailand.

Where to Get a PCR Test in Thailand?

Thailand has numerous hospitals, clinics, and centers where you can take a PCR test. First and foremost, we advise you to book an appointment to ensure you'll be able to get tested before departure. Your English-speaking Sawa Discovery team can also help you book an appointment.

In Thailand, some hospitals and clinics have set up drive-through services. This means you can be tested from your vehicle without getting out.

All the addresses listed above also offer antigen tests. However, we still recommend getting a PCR test before leaving Thailand, as some airlines require it. Don't take the risk of being denied boarding simply because of a test issue.

Each of these facilities will provide you with a certificate attesting to the test and results. The certificate can be issued to you in English.

We must emphasize that while pharmacies do offer antigen tests, they do not issue certificates. You will definitely need to visit a hospital, clinic, or laboratory.

Hello, We're leaving on February 27 for Koh Phangan, with one night in Koh Samui while waiting for the results of the first PCR test apparently organized by the first hotel we've booked. But I can't find a website or phone number to book the second PCR test on day 6, and apparently you have to have booked it before arriving in Thailand. Thank you

Hello Julien, it's the first hotel that's responsible for reserving all necessary tests. You need to notify your hotel that you'll be in Koh Pha Gan for the second test and they'll take care of booking it. You need to give them the address of the second hotel (hotel SHA+) and they'll get in touch.

Hello, First, thank you for the information. Reading your first paragraph, I understand that a simple antigen test with a certificate is sufficient to return to France. But in the 6th paragraph you say you need the negative PCR test. Is this correct? Thank you for your feedback

Hello Ken, France only requires travelers entering its territory to have a negative antigen test, so this is sufficient. However, you must verify what your airline requires, as it may have specific requirements.
