The spirit of travel
Discover Madagascar with us! Rest assured that your journey will be unique and original through extraordinary landscapes where the population is always welcoming.
The first stage of this journey offers us a beautiful overview of the richness of the humid forests of Atsinanana (Eastern Madagascar), through the trails of the Andasibe National Park. The remaining primary forests in Malagasy territory are fascinating: the endemism rates of both flora (orchids, rosewood, medicinal plants, etc.) and fauna (lemurs, chameleons, birds…) are very high, offering environments of great richness and unique in the world.
We will retrace our steps southward to reach Ambatolampy, a village renowned for its aluminum craftsmanship. This road reveals landscapes of terraced rice fields. A change of scenery is guaranteed. Brick houses or rammed red earth, winding road bordered by small waterfalls…
The road to the South is even richer in discoveries and wonders: from silk worm breeding in the Manandona valley to wooden houses richly decorated with sculptures and marquetry from Ambositra, passing through the dense forest of Ranomafana National Park and the canyons of the Isalo National Park, we discover at every turn a constantly renewed landscape.
Our journey ends beautifully at the fishing village of Ifaty, on the edge of the Mozambique Channel. A feeling of deep well-being, beside a peaceful beach bordered on one side by turquoise waters, and on the other by baobab forests…
You can also privatize this journey on the dates of your choice, for you and your travel companions only.
For a private trip, the price then depends on the number of participants (please contact us).
Of course, as part of a private trip, this program can serve only as a basis for reflection and based on your wishes we will propose a fully customized journey.

Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Departure towards the East, Andasibe
Departure for Andasibe, due East, on National Road 2 which connects the capital to Tamatave, Madagascar's main port. Several possible stops along the way to stroll around, visit villages or discover the local fauna and flora, lush and exuberant in this region of the Great Island.
Arrival in early afternoon at Andasibe and hotel check-in. Walks in the village are possible, at the edges of the National Park which we will visit tomorrow morning. Night visits to the surrounding private or village reserves are also possible (not included).

Discovery of Andasibe National Park, Meeting the Indri-Indri
Visit to Andasibe National Park, a conservation site for the Indri-Indri, the largest of lemurs. We approach the primary forest of Andasibe through the Analamazaotra Special Reserve crossed by the Amboasary River. This reserve is the natural habitat of a large population of lemurs including 11 other lemur species besides the Indri Indri such as bamboo lemurs, sifakas… Other animal species can be spotted: chameleons, birds… The flora is equally remarkable with several varieties of orchids such as eulophiella, rosewood, palm trees and medicinal plants.

On the Way to the South on National Route 7, towards the Manandona Valley and Mount Ibity
We leave Andasibe heading towards the Central Highlands taking a winding road lined with small waterfalls, terraced rice paddies, a legacy of Indonesian culture and its villages with brick houses or rammed earth in red clay. Passage through Ambatolampy, renowned for its aluminum craftsmanship.
We continue our journey to Manandona where we stay with a local family for a unique experience with the locals. In one or more traditional houses, we are warmly welcomed, with basic comfort (outdoor facilities and bucket showers).

Hike along the trails of the Manandona valley, at the foot of Mount Ibity
From the lodge; we set off on foot to discover the typical environment of the Highlands. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Ibity massif, the Manandona Valley is rich and prosperous. The land here is also very generous and rice is the main crop.
After gaining altitude by following good trails crisscrossing the foothills, we return to the valley to meet the local inhabitants. All are rice farmers and own zebu cattle, some breed silkworms, others are blacksmiths, basket weavers or carpenters. Traditional craftsmanship is omnipresent.
Our guides are part of a local association for the development of the region. They will be able to tell you about their activities, local customs, traditions and development.
Second night with a local family.
Picnic lunch

Stopover in Ambositra and its wood craftsmanship, then drive to the thermal town of Ranomafana
After breakfast, we leave the Manandona Valley to continue south. We cross the highlands and visit the town of Ambositra, the famous capital of wood craftsmanship. Meeting with marquetry artisans: in their workshops, they compete with imagination and ingenuity in the creation of marquetry items and wood sculptures.
We continue our journey to Ranomafana and its National Park home to a multitude of lemur species, which we will visit the next day. We reach the village at the end of the day.
Ranomafana, a park entirely forested, which extends over 41,601 hectares. Designated World Natural Heritage of Atsinanana in 2007, it is home to a wealth of endemic but endangered biodiversity.
It is home to rare and critically endangered lemur species.
The park is also the genetic reservoir of certain rare and endemic plant species. It is crossed by numerous watercourses, tributaries of the Namorona River.

Exploration of Ranomafana National Park, continuation towards Fianarantsoa
Morning discovery of the Ranomafana forest, with very rich and varied fauna and flora. The Ranomafana National Park covers nearly 41,600 hectares of humid tropical forest. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this forest is home to exceptional endemic biodiversity, including many rare species, unfortunately threatened with extinction.
You may have the chance to spot some of the 26 species of lemurs documented in this area, as well as birds, butterflies, bats, chameleons, other reptiles and amphibians. There is also great diversity of medicinal plants, orchids and carnivorous plants.
Keep your eyes open!
We continue our journey towards Fianarantsoa, the historical and cultural capital of the Betsileo region. It is also the Malagasy city with the most cultural buildings and schools.
Like Tana, the city is divided into three parts:
The upper town, where the Merina governor's palace once stood, and where you can today admire Protestant temples, a Lutheran college, a brick cathedral with Tuscan style, the Jesuit school of Ambozotany and Antsenakely square, where a small market is held.
The new town, the administrative district, where you can also find the zoma (Friday market),
The lower town, Ampasambazaha, the heart of the city where you can find the Chinese and Indian commercial quarters.
Fianarantsoa is also known for its tea plantations and vineyards.

Canoe descent along the Haute-Matsiatra, and visit to the Sahambavy tea plantation
Departure for the village of Mahasoabe, located about twenty kilometers east of Fianarantsoa. Introduction with the boatmen, beginning of the descent of the river by traditional canoe.
Two and a half hours of navigation, the river winds between rice paddies and granite mountains, numerous stops to immerse yourself in rural life. Several species of aquatic birds are visible. We dock at the village of Iseta and after a half hour walk through fields and villages, we resume our vehicle for Sahambavy.
In the afternoon, visit to Madagascar's unique tea plantation, and tasting of this distinctive tea. The factory was built in 1978 by the Malagasy State. It was then privatized by a Public Limited Company. On average 20 tons of wet leaves are harvested per day, from 355 hectares of plantations, of which 94 hectares are managed by farmers.
Return to Fianarantsoa at the end of the day.
Duration: +/- 2h30 of navigation and +/- 1h30 of walking
Duration: +/- 1h of car transfer
Distance: 40 km

The Lemur Catta of the Anja Village Reserve, continuation towards Ranohira
Through the patchwork of terraced rice fields and diverse crops where all shades of green are displayed, road to Ambalavao, known for its vineyards.
Stop at the small Anja Village Reserve: a gallery forest of ficus, lianas and orchids has developed between spectacular rocky outcrops, sometimes forming caves adopted as shelters by certain animals. On the slopes of the reliefs, the vegetation relay has been colonized by succulent plants, such as kalanchoes and pachypodiums.
In this green paradise live in small colonies these ring-tailed lemurs which are virtually the emblem of the Great Island, the ring-tailed lemurs. They spend much of their time on the ground, are not too shy and are therefore easily observable. The revenues from the Anja site are managed by the AMI (Anja Miray) association and returned to economic and social projects aimed at improving agricultural yields, the development of crafts, health and education for the benefit of local villagers.
Duration: 1 hour of walk at the Anja reserve

Hiking through the emblematic Isalo National Park
A beautiful day of discovery on foot in the ruiniform massif of the Isalo National Park.
Isalo National Park was created in 1962, and is classified in the category of exceptional parks. Extending over nearly 100 km from North to South, it is unique in Madagascar due to its geomorphological formation dating from the Jurassic: this ruiniform massif of continental sandstone, carved with deep canyons, is home to endemic rupicole vegetation (Aloes, Euphorbias, Pachypodes...).
It is also home to exceptional fauna, where most species are endemic, such as for example rock reptiles, lemurs and other primates.
The predominant ethnic group in this region is the Bara people, living essentially from zebu herding and agriculture. Considered as descendants of the Bantu, the Bara are cattle herders but also fierce warriors, proud and ready to do anything to defend their freedom.

Discovering the Vezo fishermen's village in the Mozambique Channel
We cross the villages of Ilakaka and Sakaraha, still on the immense Horombe plateau, small peaceful settlements until the discovery of a huge sapphire deposit that transformed them into veritable mining towns worthy of the American Far West epic.
First glimpse of baobabs and crossing of the Mahafaly limestone plateau, its famous and impressive tombs topped with funeral sculptures called "Aloalo" and painted with naive scenes of life.
Visit to Tuléar. Road in the early afternoon to Ifaty, about thirty kilometers north of Tuléar, to reach the land of the Vezo fishermen.
Hotel installation in Ifaty. We leave our driver-guide here, who will return to the capital the next day.

Free stay in Ifaty
Ifaty, Mangily, Madiorano and Ambolimailaka are small villages facing the majestic lagoon of Ranobe with turquoise waters, renowned for its coral reef. They serve here as beach resorts.
Free stay, activities to be seen with the hotel or with your guide: hiking in the hinterland of the dry forest with diverse varieties of endemic thorny plants, euphorbias, Didiéracées, pachypodiums and Baobabs.
The visit can be done by zebu cart or on foot; or relaxation to enjoy the beach, a beautiful invitation to swim in this magnificent lagoon.
Also on the agenda: speedboat excursion, traditional outrigger canoe ride, trolling fishing, water skiing, snorkeling or scuba diving…
Or simply strolling along the beach and meeting with the local population and discovering in depth the life of these fishing villages.
