Chumphon Pinnacle

Depth: 14 m minimum - 40 m maximum.

Diving Level: Intermediate divers (Open Water certification or higher).

Ideal site for the Deep Diver specialty.

Chumphon Pinnacle is widely considered Koh Tao's finest diving site. It features a deep pinnacle with numerous crevices and fissures, its peaks carpeted with anemones, sponges, and corals.

Above the pinnacle, you'll witness impressive schools of fish—yellow-tail barracudas, chevron barracudas, snappers, batfish, trevally, and fusiliers. Closer to the rock formations, you'll spot rose anemone colonies, massive marbled groupers, moray eels, angelfish, trumpetfish, and triggerfish.

For macro enthusiasts, there are countless small creatures: banded boxer shrimp, Janus pipefish, and numerous nudibranch species. It's also one of the best spots for spotting whale sharks in the area (seasonal, weather permitting).

South West Pinnacle

Depth: 5 m minimum - 30 m maximum.

Diving Level: Intermediate and advanced divers (Open Water, Advanced Open Water, or higher).

South West Pinnacle is one of Koh Tao's most spectacular diving sites. It comprises seven granite pinnacles, their peaks adorned with magnificent mats of green, pink, and blue anemones. Stunning sponges and corals—gorgonians, red whip coral, and wire corals—flourish on the rocky walls.

Expect to observe impressive schools of snappers, yellow-tail barracudas, trevally, fusiliers, and occasionally tuna. Near the rock walls and crevices, encounter large groupers, moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, and sometimes scorpionfish.

The site also hosts numerous macro species: boxfish, Durban dancing shrimp, and crabs.

Green Rock

Depth: 5 m minimum - 30 m maximum.

Diving Level: Intermediate divers (Open Water and above).

Excellent for buoyancy control training.

Located off the northern coast of Koh Nang Yuan, northwest of Koh Tao, Green Rock is composed of large rock formations offering expansive arches, tunnels, caverns, caves, and crevices—a true playground for divers.

This network of underwater cavities hosts rich biodiversity. Yellow-tail barracuda schools patrol the rock summits, while deeper waters reveal diverse fish species: batfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, harlequin tuskfish. Hawksbill and green sea turtles are also sightings you might be lucky to experience!

The site is particularly renowned for two species found in its northern section: titan triggerfish and yellowmargin triggerfish. They occupy their spawning pits and can be territorial and aggressive during breeding season (April/May).

Round out your experience spotting numerous macro species: nudibranchs, Durban dancing shrimp, ghost shrimp, and pipefish.

White Rock

Depth: 2 m minimum - 22 m maximum.

Diving Level: Beginner to experienced divers.

Ideal site for Night Diver specialty.

Considered Koh Tao's largest diving site by area, White Rock features two prominent rock formations with a magnificent coral garden and sandy zone between them.

Beyond the hard and soft corals, the site hosts numerous species. At shallow depths, spot schools of yellow-tail barracudas and typical tropical Gulf of Thailand fish (angelfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish). Sea turtles are also observable.

Approaching the rock walls reveals groupers, moray eels, sea snakes, and moral eels. Beneath overhangs hide stingrays.

When conditions permit, White Rock excels as a night dive site—witness nocturnal species like squid and octopuses and observe fish in full hunting mode.

Twins Pinnacle

Depth: 5 m minimum - 20 m maximum.

Diving Level: Beginner to experienced divers.

The site (particularly Buoyancy World) is excellent for buoyancy training. Also a premier spot for marine naturalist and underwater photography/videography specialties.

Easily accessible and offering impressive marine diversity, Twins Pinnacle ranks among Koh Tao's most popular diving sites. Its sheltered position from currents makes it one of the rare sites accessible year-round.

Despite its name (Twins), the site comprises not two but three pinnacles—two main rock formations and a smaller group.

Marine species include: longface emperor fish, boxfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, parrotfish, trumpetfish, triggerfish, and occasionally green and hawksbill turtles.

Nestled in crevices and beneath ledges are stingrays and large groupers. For macro enthusiasts, it's paradise: seahorses, nudibranchs, pipefish, shrimp.

Another distinctive feature: Buoyancy World—artificial structures (concrete animal sculptures, tunnels, rings) installed by local communities. Beyond supporting marine life development, it trains divers seeking to improve buoyancy control.

Japanese Garden

Depth: 1 m minimum - 16 m maximum.

Diving Level: Beginner and above.

Also one of Koh Tao's best snorkeling spots.

Located on beautiful Koh Nang Yuan, Japanese Garden is a highly accessible, shallow site—perfect for beginner divers, snorkelers, and freedivers in Koh Tao.

Celebrated for magnificent hard and soft coral gardens—brain corals, lobed corals, staghorn corals, lettuce corals, table corals, giant sponges, and anemones.

This coral diversity shelters a wealth of reef fish: butterflyfish, trumpetfish, parrotfish, damselfish, squirrelfish, giant pufferfish, clownfish, coachfish. Also spot moray eels, sea snakes, cuttlefish, stingrays, and numerous nudibranchs.

Shark Island

Depth: 0 m minimum - 28 m maximum.

Diving Level: Beginner, intermediate, and advanced divers.

Also favored by snorkelers and freedivers.

Located less than 1 km from Koh Tao's southeastern tip, Shark Island is an uninhabited granite islet rising over 10 m above sea level and descending to 15 m depth. Surrounded by scattered rocks and sandy expanses reaching nearly 28 m depth. The name derives from its fin-like shape, not resident sharks.

The site dazzles with colors from abundant corals: whip corals, soft corals, brain corals, and sponges, gorgonians, and sea anemones.

Marine life includes angelfish, butterflyfish, snappers, batfish, trevally, chevron barracudas, pufferfish, titan triggerfish, and occasionally hawksbill turtles and stingrays near sandy zones.

Approaching rock formations, observe large groupers, yellow boxfish, harlequin tuskfish, moray eels, trumpetfish, and nudibranchs.

HTMS Sattakut (Wreck Diving)

Depth: 18 m minimum - 30 m maximum.

Diving Level: Intermediate and advanced divers (Advanced Open Water).

Ideal for Wreck Diver specialty certification.

Seeking wreck diving? Head to HTMS Sattakut. It's a Thai naval vessel gifted by the U.S. Navy after World War II. It served as a troop transport during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Deliberately scuttled in 2011 to create an artificial reef.

The vessel rests at 30 m, its mast top at 18 m. It measures 49 m long and 7 m wide. The wreck remains in excellent condition—two anti-aircraft guns remain at bow and stern, plus stairs, cabins visible.

For certified Wreck Diver specialists, venturing inside reveals compartments and secrets.

Though not heavily populated by marine life, you'll spot giant groupers, snappers, butterflyfish, and yellow-tail barracudas.

Sail Rock

Depth: 1 m minimum - 40 m maximum.

Diving Level: Beginner to advanced divers.

One of Koh Tao's most remote sites—yet among Thailand's finest.

In open water between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock is considered among Thailand's best diving sites. A 2-hour boat journey from Koh Tao, it absolutely deserves its ranking!

An impressive granite pinnacle rises 15 m above sea level. The main structure descends to 20 m, with additional formations extending to 40 m depth. Its signature feature? A spectacular vertical chimney accessible at 18 m depth, exiting at 12 or 6 m.

Marine life includes impressive schools: yellow-tail and chevron barracudas, batfish, snappers, trevally. Closer to walls, numerous reef fish—angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish.

The chimney hosts its own ecosystem. Inside, spot giant groupers, yellow boxfish, and moray eels, observe ghost shrimp, warty slugs, and numerous nudibranchs.

Sail Rock is renowned as one of Thailand's best sites for whale shark encounters. Requires luck and optimal season (January–May).
