Chumphon Pinnacle

Chumphon Pinnacle is widely regarded as Koh Tao's finest dive site. It features a dramatic pinnacle studded with fissures and crevasses, with summits carpeted in anemone gardens, sponges, and coral.

Above the pinnacle, you'll encounter impressive schools of yellowtail barracuda and chevron barracuda, snapper, batfish, trevally, and fusiliers. Moving closer to the rock formations, you'll spot colonies of pink clownfish, enormous marbled groupers, moray eels, angelfish, trumpetfish, and triggerfishes.

For macro enthusiasts, countless small creatures await: ringed boxing shrimp, Janss pipefish, and numerous nudibranch species. This is also one of the region's best sites for spotting whale sharks (seasonally and weather permitting).

South West Pinnacle

South West Pinnacle is among Koh Tao's most beautiful dive sites. It comprises a series of seven granite rock pinnacles. The summits are blanketed in spectacular green, pink, and blue anemone carpets. Rock walls host sublime sponges and corals including gorgonians, red harp coral, and whip coral.

Wildlife is impressive: expansive schools of snapper, yellowtail barracuda, trevally, fusiliers, and occasionally tuna. Approaching rock walls and crevasses, you may encounter large groupers, moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, and sometimes scorpionfish.

The site also harbors numerous macro species including boxing shrimp, Durban dancing shrimp, and crabs.

Green Rock

Located off the northern shores of Koh Nang Yuan, northwest of Koh Tao, Green Rock features large rock formations creating an excellent playground for divers. Expansive arches, tunnels, caverns, grottos, and crevasses make this site truly special.

This network of underwater cavities shelters remarkable biodiversity. Yellowtail barracuda schools hover above the rocks, while deeper zones reveal diverse species: batfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, harlequin tuskfish... Sea turtles—both hawksbill and green—are regularly spotted!

The site is particularly renowned for two species found in its northern section: titan triggerfish and yellow-margin triggerfish (giant triggerfish). They nest in spawning pits and become territorial and occasionally aggressive during breeding season (April/May).

Macro enthusiasts will also find nudibranches, Durban dancing shrimp, ghost shrimp, and pipefish.

White Rock

Koh Tao's largest dive site by area, White Rock features two massive rock formations flanking a magnificent coral garden and sandy zones.

Beyond its abundant hard and soft corals, the site hosts diverse species. At shallow depths, schools of yellowtail barracuda and typical Gulf of Thailand tropical fish species (angelfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish) are common. Sea turtles are regularly encountered.

Approaching rock walls, you'll spot groupers, moray eels, sea snakes, and gulper eels. Hidden beneath ledges lurk stingrays.

When conditions align, White Rock excels as a night dive site. Witness nocturnal species like squid and octopuses, and observe predatory behavior in action.

Twins Pinnacle

Easy to access and offering remarkable marine diversity, Twins Pinnacle ranks among Koh Tao's most popular dive sites. Its sheltered position from currents makes it one of the rare sites accessible year-round.

Despite its name (Twins), the site comprises not two but three pinnacles (two primary rock formations plus a smaller rock cluster).

Marine species include longface emperorfish, boxfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, parrotfish, trumpetfish, triggerfish, and occasionally green and hawksbill sea turtles.

Nestled in crevices and beneath ledges, you'll discover stingrays and substantial groupers. The site is a macro paradise: seahorses, nudibranches, pipefish, shrimp.

Another feature is Buoyancy World—artificial structures (concrete animal sculptures, tunnels, rings...) created by local communities. Beyond fostering marine life development, these training structures help divers improve their buoyancy control.

Japanese Garden

Located on the stunning Koh Nang Yuan Island, Japanese Garden offers shallow, accessible diving ideal for beginners, snorkelers, and freedivers exploring Koh Tao.

Famous for its spectacular hard and soft coral gardens, you'll find brain coral, lobed coral, staghorn coral, lettuce coral, table coral, plus giant sponges and anemones.

This coral diversity harbors abundant reef fish: butterflyfish, trumpetfish, parrotfish, damselfish, squirrelfish, giant pufferfish, clownfish, coachfish... Moray eels, sea snakes, cuttlefish, stingrays, and numerous nudibranchs complete the picture.

Shark Island

Less than 1 km from Koh Tao's southeastern tip, Shark Island is an uninhabited granite islet rising over 10 m above sea level and descending to 15 m depth. Scattered rocks and sandy expanses extend to approximately 28 m. The name derives from its fin-like shape, not shark presence.

The site showcases an incredible color palette through abundant corals: whip coral, soft coral, brain coral, gorgonians, sponges, and sea anemones.

Marine life includes angelfish, butterflyfish, snapper, batfish, trevally, chevron barracuda, pufferfish, titan triggerfish, and occasional hawksbill sea turtles and stingrays in sandy zones.

Approaching rock formations, observe large groupers, yellow boxfish, harlequin tuskfish, moray eels, gulper eels, and nudibranchs.

HTMS Sattakut (Wreck Dive)

Seeking wreck diving? Visit HTMS Sattakut. This Thai naval vessel, gifted by the U.S. Navy post-World War II, served as a troop transport during the Battle of Iwo Jima. It was deliberately sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef.

The vessel rests at 30 m depth, with the mast top at 18 m. Measuring 49 m long and 7 m wide, the wreck remains in excellent condition. Two anti-aircraft cannons are visible at bow and stern, along with stairs, forward cabin, and more.

Certified wreck divers holding the Wreck Diver specialty can explore the vessel's interior chambers and secrets.

While not densely populated with marine life, you may spot giant groupers, snapper, butterflyfish, and yellowtail barracuda.

Good to Know:

Two additional wreck sites exist near Koh Tao:

• HTMS Suphairin (also called 313), located northwest of Koh Tao.
• HTMS Hanhaksattru (also called 312), situated in Aow Mao Bay, east of the island.

These identical vessels are decommissioned Thai fast-attack naval boats that served over 40 years before retiring in 2018. Both measure 44 m long and 7 m wide and were deliberately sunk on September 7, 2023.

Sail Rock

Located in open water between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock ranks among Thailand's premier dive sites. Despite being a 2-hour boat journey from Koh Tao, it absolutely deserves its place!

This impressive granite pinnacle rises 15 m above sea level. The primary structure descends to 20 m with additional rock formations extending to 40 m. Its hallmark feature: a remarkable vertical chimney accessible at 18 m depth, exiting at 12 or 6 m.

Wildlife includes impressive fish schools: yellowtail and chevron barracuda, batfish, snapper, trevally... Near rock walls, reef fish abound (angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish...).

The chimney shelters its own ecosystem. Spot giant groupers, yellow boxfish, and moray eels playing hide-and-seek; observe ghost shrimp, warty sea slugs, and numerous nudibranch species.

Sail Rock is renowned as one of Thailand's premier whale shark dive sites. Success requires luck and optimal timing (January to May).

Practical Information:

When is the best time to dive Koh Tao? While diving is possible year-round, the optimal period runs January through August, offering superior visibility. This window also maximizes whale shark encounters. Avoid November through December (monsoon season) when visibility diminishes significantly.
