Where to surf in Madagascar?

Several surf spots in Madagascar are well-known, with the southern region being the most popular, although the northeast also offers great options. You can surf year-round, but the best conditions are typically from September to October.

Here are some of the island’s most famous surfing locations:

West Coast

Lavanono

The best and most stunning surf spot is in Lavanono, a small village in the far south of Madagascar. Located at the base of a vast plateau and a 60 km-long cliff, Lavanono is about 250 km from Fort-Dauphin.

This picturesque spot offers a beautiful left-hand wave over a coral reef, suitable for surfers of all levels.

Anakao

The most famous surf spot in Madagascar is Anakao, located in the southwest of the island. It’s an internationally recognized surfing haven but remains far from crowded. Anakao features a hollow, powerful left-hand wave breaking over a reef, best suited for experienced surfers.

Several additional waves can be found near Anakao:

• Flameballs: North of Nosy Ve, this fast and long left-hand wave is of international class. However, it’s best to avoid low tide, as the coral is close to the surface.
• Jelly Baby: Directly opposite the southern tip of Anakao, this wave is more accessible for both beginners and experienced surfers.

East Coast

Fort-Dauphin

In the southeast, Fort-Dauphin benefits from southern and southeastern winds, bringing in strong swells and excellent surfing conditions.

Sainte-Marie  

In the northeast lies the idyllic island of Sainte-Marie, with its coast protected by an extensive coral barrier. Two smaller spots are available:

- At the tip of Ampanihy. 

- Near the village of Ambodiatafana, offering both left- and right-hand waves.

Sambava

On the mainland north of Sainte-Marie, Sambava, also known as the vanilla capital, offers a beautiful right-hand wave south of the city, breaking at the mouth of a river.

Mahambo

South of Sambava, Mahambo is renowned for its year-round waves, making it a great spot for surfing enthusiasts.
