  • In the morning, visit the Sultan Palace, the Grand Mosque and the Chinese temple.

  • Then we head northwest, towards the Bukit Lawang village, famous for its orangutan rehabilitation center. We then cross numerous rubber tree plantations and take the opportunity to stretch our legs, while discovering the methods of exploiting this precious sap.

  • At the start of the morning, we hike to meet the orangutans, who are very numerous in the Gunung Leuser park. Then we continue through the tropical forest, to further explore its thousand and one secrets. With a little luck, we then have the opportunity to observe some rare black gibbons.

    Night in a tent or in a refuge in the jungle.

  • We continue our exploration of the jungle of Mt Leuser and join Bukit Lawang in the early afternoon.

  • Transfer to Berastagi, the capital of the Karo Batak country, one of the most prosperous in the region.

Day 5Ascent of the Sibayak Volcano

  • Early in the morning, we are dropped off at the foot of the Sibayak volcano, which dominates the Karo plateau. We begin the ascent along a path covered in thick, rustling jungle. Picnic at the top of the volcano, from where the panorama of the entire region is superb, then we begin the descent, via an opposite route, which leads us to the hot springs of Debuk-Debuk, where we have the opportunity to enjoy the curative virtues of water in pools of hot and sulfur water.

Day 6An island on an island

Day 6An island on an island

  • Mid-morning transfer to the famous Sipiso-Piso, from where we get our first glimpse of Lake Toba, the largest crater lake in the world.

  • Then, on the way to Parapat, we visit an old Simalunggung royal palace. We also take the opportunity to stretch our legs by strolling through various plantations and traditional villages.

  • Arriving in Parapat, we board a regular ferry to island of Samosir, which lies in the middle of the lake.

Day 7Exploring Samosir

  • The day is dedicated to discovering the island of Samosir, the capital of culture Batak Toba. We hike through villages and rice fields, and take the opportunity to stop at Ambarita, to discover the remains (in stone) of a meeting place of the ancient Sialagan kings.

    In Tomok, we visit the tombs of the Sidabutar kings, and we end in the village of Simanindo, where we discover an interesting museum which depicts the local culture, and attend some traditional dances. Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon

Day 8Pangururan hot springs

  • Morning transfer to the center of the little-visited island of Samosir. Isolated on a high plateau, we discover Lake Sidihoni (a lake on an island on a lake on an island!), which extends over 1 km² and whose changing color has forged more than one legend. We then begin a lovely hike towards Pangururan, on the western coast of the island, through rich vegetation and along a path which offers us breathtaking landscapes. We also come across farmers, armed with their machetes, going to the fields. In this region, oral tradition has perpetuated numerous legends. In Pangururan, we have the opportunity to relax in hot spring baths.

  • In the afternoon, we take the ferry back to Parapat then the road to Medan, via the large towns of Pematang Siantar and Tebing Tinggi, around which sprawl immense plantations of rubber trees and oil palms.
