It stands on an islet beaten by the ocean waves, and is a popular place of pilgrimage for tourists and photographers. The Tanah Lot temple was built in the 16th century on the advice of the famous Javanese priest Danghyang Nirartha to pay homage to the guardian spirits of the sea.

Note: this famous temple is much less visited in the early hours of the day.

  • We then head for Pemuteran, a small seaside resort on Bali's north-west coast, far from the tourist concentrations. The rest of the day is free.

Day 9To Sanur

  • This morning we set off to visit the Besakih temple. Situated on the misty slopes of Mount Agung at an altitude of 1,000 metres, this is the island's largest temple, comprising a religious complex of 22 separate temples spread over seven terraces. With its 11-storey "meru" roofs, the almost constant religious ceremonies and its viewpoint "between sea and mountains", this temple is surely one of the most spiritual. It is also the oldest and most revered temple in Bali.

  • Continue on to the Goa Lawah cave, founded in 1007 by Empu Kuteran and reputed to bring good luck. It is one of Bali's nine directional temples (known as "kayangan jagat") protecting the island from evil spirits. The main attraction is the colony of bats and the legends associated with them.

  • Finally, we continue our journey to Sanur, where we arrive in the afternoon. Check-in at the hotel and evening at leisure.
