The Russian Market of Phnom Penh

For tourists, typical markets are a must-see. Vibrant and colorful, they are often places of socialization, providing a wealth of information about local lifestyles, and, of course, offering a chance to stock up on souvenirs to bring home.

Like any major city, Phnom Penh is not short of markets. The Russian Market, or Phsar Toul Tom Poung, located to the south of the capital, is one of the most famous. You’ll be happy to discover it during your stay in Cambodia.

History

The name "Russian Market" may seem odd for a Cambodian market. However, you won't find vodka, matryoshka dolls, fur hats, or other typical Russian items. The name comes from the large number of Russian expatriates who frequented the market in the 1980s, during the period of Vietnamese occupation. During this time, Phsar Toul Tom Poung flourished and has since gained popularity, becoming a must-visit for passing tourists.

Visiting the Market

Always bustling with activity, this large covered market is home to hundreds of small shops and stalls lined up along narrow, dimly lit aisles.

It’s a real treasure trove, organized thematically. The mechanical parts section is followed by tool and hardware shops, with drugstore vendors located near the food area. A large section gathers fabric, clothing, and fashion accessories. This is the perfect spot to update your wardrobe at a low cost. Along with Khmer-style tunics, shirts, and pants, you will find both counterfeit and authentic branded items such as Diesel, Calvin Klein, or Banana Republic, produced in local factories. Additionally, a section with many tailor shops offers the chance, if you stay a few days in the capital, to get custom-made dresses and suits.

For a great selection of souvenirs, head to the arts and crafts section. Wooden sculptures, miniature Buddhas, silk, betel boxes, buffalo bells, traditional musical instruments, small dishes, silver objects and jewelry, paintings… you’ll have plenty of choices. However, be cautious with the antiques being sold, as there are many fakes.

As you approach the food section, you’ll be greeted by a mix of smells, some of which may not be particularly pleasant. Fresh or dried fish, a variety of meats from frog legs to chicken, pork, and beef, are displayed alongside a colorful array of vegetables, roots, and tropical fruits. Your eyes will delight in the sight of the long local green beans and the incredible variety of aromatic herbs. If you’re feeling hungry, you may try a bowl of soup, stir-fried noodles, or other freshly prepared specialties by the market's cooks.

As in all Asian countries, you'll also have the opportunity to buy various spices, sometimes vacuum-sealed, including the famous Kampot pepper.

While the Russian Market can be tiring due to the ambient heat and crowded aisles, don't miss out, as you’ll always find good deals and little gifts to spoil yourself or bring joy to your loved ones.

How to get there?

Phsar Toul Tom Poung is located on Street 155 in the Chamkar Mon district. You can take a tuk-tuk from anywhere in Phnom Penh to get there. All drivers are familiar with the famous Russian Market.

Opening Hours

The Russian Market is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting in the morning, as the heat can become harder to bear during the day in this crowded, covered location.
