Visiting Katieng Waterfall

Overview

Nestled in the heart of a lush forest, Katieng Waterfall is part of Lbang I commune, in the Lum Phat district. The name “Katieng” comes from the Kreung hill tribe residing in the nearby village of Ka Kieng. The waterfall is about 10 meters high and flows all year round, never drying up. Wooden stairs provide access to the basin below, where the cascade flows into a small natural pool.

What to do?

Surrounded by greenery and serenity, Katieng offers visitors a chance to enjoy the tranquility of nature. Swimming is allowed in the refreshing waters, and there are shaded areas under large trees ideal for resting or relaxing.

Picnicking is a popular activity here. Simply follow the wooden staircase down to the base of the falls and find a scenic spot to settle in. Higher up near the entrance, you’ll find small stands offering snacks, drinks, and local souvenirs for sale.

Visitors can take beautiful photographs of the surrounding landscape and the waterfall itself. Breathing in the fresh air, listening to birdsong, and enjoying a moment of peace make for a memorable nature escape.

What to see

The most spectacular view of the waterfall is from below—a little slice of paradise. To enjoy it, follow the wooden steps that descend through the gorge. At the base, large natural boulders are scattered, often used by hikers and visitors as a place to rest and admire the view.

Beyond the waterfall, you can extend your exploration through the surrounding area. The path leading to Katieng also passes through captivating villages where you can discover the craftsmanship of the Kreung people. Traditional items like handwoven baskets, local textiles, and gong-shaped gourds are available for purchase.

For those eager to delve deeper, consider continuing your walk to Lbang I village just a few kilometers away. There, you can interact with locals and learn more about their daily lives and customs.

On your way back, you may also stop at Wat Thmay Pagoda. A small path lined with colorful flags leads to this serene Buddhist site, where monks still reside. In addition to the temple, you can visit the communal hall and classroom. The area is surrounded by jungle and small plantations, adding to the peaceful atmosphere.

How to get there

Direct buses run from Phnom Penh to the town of Banlung. From there, Katieng Waterfall is just about an hour’s drive away. To reach the falls, you’ll need to rent a motorbike, bicycle, or four-wheel drive vehicle, as the road to the falls is made of red earth and can be difficult to navigate in certain conditions.

Best time to visit

  • Rainy season: The road can be challenging, but the waterfall is at its most spectacular during this time.
  • Dry season: The road is easily accessible, making it an ideal time for biking and hiking excursions.
