Banlung

Banlung is the capital of Banlung District and the Ratanakiri Province. It is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, home to rich natural resources. The city offers visitors the chance to discover the splendor of its lush flora, abundant wildlife, and local culture. Whether hiking on trails or aboard bamboo rafts, tourists enjoy these walks, either on foot or by water, alone, with family, or in groups.

History

After the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, the capital of Ratanakiri was moved to the city of Banlung to facilitate exchanges with neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Laos. Formerly called Labansiek, Banlung became the provincial capital.

Geography

Banlung is located in the mountains at the center of Ratanakiri province, one of the most isolated regions of Cambodia. Bordered by the Vietnamese and Laotian borders, Ratanakiri is 636 km from Phnom Penh and is situated in the northeastern part of the country. Banlung has 16 villages grouped into three communes: Kachanh, Labansiek, and Yeom Laom.

Banlung today

Banlung is often used as a base for travelers visiting the surrounding areas. Its geographical location offers easy access to the city's main tourist attractions, which significantly contribute to the development of its ecotourism.

Given its wide secondary roads colored by the reddish ochre of the earth, this place resembles towns from the Wild West. Sometimes, Banlung is renamed "dey krahorm" or "red earth." Its buildings, mostly new houses recently constructed on both sides of the main road, and the vegetation are often covered in red dust.

Banlung is one of the least populated cities in Cambodia. In 2006, its population was only 17,000. These inhabitants are local vendors from an indigenous minority called "chunchiet." The men of this minority are recognized by their multicolored baskets carried on their backs to transport goods, while the women are identified by their turbans made from a Sarong, a piece of plaid cotton fabric.

To experience a multisensory journey, the main market in Banlung is well worth a visit. It is a traditional market that allows visitors to discover local products and the local gastronomic culture. It is a bustling market where minorities from the surrounding villages come to purchase or sell agricultural or livestock products.

Virachey National Park

Located near the city, Virachey National Park is home to the biodiversity of the Ratanakiri region. Recently designated as a protected area, it is the largest park in Cambodia. The area is home to many animal species, including leopards, elephants, gibbons, and bears. For nature-loving tourists, the local government organizes multi-day trekking routes, including guides and stays among the local population.

Yeak Leom Volcanic Lake

Yeak Leom Lake is one of the city's most important attractions. For locals, this lake holds mystical significance, being home to mysterious aquatic creatures, which is why it is considered sacred. It is a volcanic lake, 50 meters deep, located in a crater. Hidden in the middle of lush forest, this lake is like a natural swimming pool with a clear and transparent surface, perfect for diving or swimming.

Waterfalls

Banlung's ecotourism is developed around its waterfalls. These are among the attractions that attract tourists to Ratanakiri province. Located around the city, generally more than 30 km away, the most famous waterfalls in the region are Cha Ong Waterfall, Kachanh Waterfall, and Katieng Waterfall. Throughout the year, these sites provide unforgettable moments for tourists. During the rainy season, they sing amidst lush forests, while in the dry season, they offer tourists a refreshing swim in the region's scorching temperatures.

Climate

According to the Köppen-Geiger classification, Banlung has a tropical savanna climate with a dry winter. The area experiences significant rainfall in the summer, with an average precipitation rate of 2,725 mm. The average temperature in this part of Ratanakiri is 27°C. The hottest period of the year is in April, with temperatures reaching 38°C. The best times to visit the city are January and December, as these are the driest months of the year.

How to get there

Airplane

Banlung has a small airstrip that primarily connects the city to the capital, Phnom Penh. The airstrip is currently closed, making land transportation the only way to reach Banlung from neighboring cities: by public or private bus, car, or motorbike.

Getting around

Motorbike

To get around the city or reach nearby attractions, it is most convenient to rent a motorbike or bicycle. You will find rental services available all around the city.  

Bus

The Banlung bus station is located in the city center, south of the Independence Monument. The buses generally connect four regions: Stung Treng, Kratie, Kompong Cham, and Phnom Penh.
