Chi Phat, a wildlife and forest sanctuary

In 2007, Wildlife Alliance, an NGO specializing in wildlife and forest conservation with long-standing programs and partnerships in Cambodia, launched a project in the Chi Phat region, located in the heart of the Cardamom Mountains in Koh Kong Province. The goal—then as now—was to educate and support local communities in shifting from poaching and wildlife trafficking to sustainable livelihoods through ecotourism and environmental stewardship.

A responsible transformation

The guides who will accompany you on your adventures around the village of Chi Phat know the terrain better than anyone. And with good reason: before becoming guides and nature interpreters, many of them worked in these forests—not as protectors, but as poachers. Today, they have embraced a new path, committed to restoring the natural balance of Chi Phat and promoting it as a model of wildlife conservation. Some now speak English and are well-versed in the standards and expectations of eco-trekking and guided forest expeditions. They carry cooking gear and are often joined by a dedicated cook to assist during multi-day trips.

Engaging activities in the heart of nature

These experienced guides will lead you to breathtaking sites, far from the typical tourist trails—places only they truly know. You can set off on foot or by bicycle for a trek, observe exotic bird species, explore caves filled with bats, or navigate the region’s rivers by kayak or small boat.

For travelers seeking more peace and relaxation, there are opportunities to unwind near waterfalls and ponds, where you can also learn how to catch lobster at dusk. In this enchanting tropical setting, the guides will teach you how to prepare traditional Khmer dishes.

Your local hosts will provide all the essentials: a backpack, mountain bike, hammock with mosquito net, blanket, and more. There is no need to bring a tent or sleeping bag. The team also handles cooking and meals. The cooks routinely boil water to ensure it is safe for drinking, but you are welcome to bring your own personal water filter if you prefer.
