No sooner have we set foot on the ground than our driver welcomes us warmly at Bandaranaike International Airport. We have truly arrived in Sri Lanka.

Our luggage in the car, he immediately takes us to the first destination of our thrilling journey: Negombo.

We let ourselves be caught up in the relaxed atmosphere of this seaside resort, located just a stone's throw from the airport.

For example, we could relax by strolling through its streets and admiring its magnificent setting. We would pass by its colonial churches and canal. We would also visit its fish market.

We would finish with a boat trip to Muthurajawela Wetlands (optional activity).

Kegalle: the Elephant Haven

This morning, we're heading towards Kegalle through a mountainous area. Along our route, the scenery is simply stunning. The green gold of Sri Lanka captivates us with its beauty: rice paddies, mountains and coconut plantations.

On our journey, we have the option to stop (optional) at the "Millennium Elephant Foundation". It's a care facility for these Asian pachyderms. In addition to observing them, we could get hands-on by giving them their bath or sharing a short ride at their side.

We would also visit the local museum and paper mill (recycling elephant dung).

Then we'll settle into a guesthouse nearby. On site, we have a choice of various relaxing treatments offered by our guesthouse. All in an idyllic setting.

Relaxation in Kandy

After breakfast, we can make the most of our free time with a visit to Kandy, Sri Lanka's last monarchical capital.

We could start by exploring its town center on foot, discovering its famous Tooth Temple. It is a pagoda that is very sacred to Buddhist pilgrims. It is said to house an important relic: the canine tooth of Buddha.

After this cultural excursion, we could enjoy a stroll around Victoria Lake (approximately 4km), before continuing to its vegetable market.

This charming corner is set within 60 hectares and is bordered by the Mahaweli River. It is pleasant to stroll there for a few hours. A walk among the royal palms, the flower beds, the orchids, and the cannonball trees.

The tuk-tuk will be our lifesaving morning transport (approximately 4 hours). This small basic vehicle takes us through rice paddies, forests and tea fields.

Along the way, our driver lets us enjoy the landscape with a few stops and walking passages.

He then takes us to the small town of Haputale. This town is nestled in the heart of a magnificent mountain corridor. Things we can do there:

  • visit "Lipton's Seat", a place where a tea genius used to refresh himself

  • wander among the tea plantations

  • understand the tea leaf maturation process, accompanied by an assigned guide

  • meet the tea pickers

Udawalawe National Park

Head towards the Udawalawe National Park in the south of the island. The path leading to this protected area is dotted with natural gems.

Along the way, we stop at the majestic Ravana Falls.

In the afternoon, we board a jeep. This marks the beginning of our safari within the park. The latter, created in 1972, is home to an interesting population of elephants and a multitude of bird species.

We can also spot bears, sambars, monitor lizards, crocodiles and leopards.

Bike ride in the Sri Lankan countryside

In the afternoon, it will be on two wheels! Under the guidance of a local guide, we set off on an excursion through the Sinhalese rural landscape. Green rice paddies, vegetable gardens and small villages unfold before us. We cycle for one and a half hours.

And if thirst strikes us in the meantime, why not refresh ourselves with coconut water.

Today, we will enjoy our last moments in Sri Lanka by visiting Colombo. This coastal city is full of interesting sites.

Opportunity to take a walk through its popular neighborhoods: Pettah with its mosque and its bazaar, City Hall with its colonial-style buildings. We will cheerfully wander through the streets of this capital until we reach Beira Lake.

There, we will take a walk around it and visit Gangaramaya Temple. We will take the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, and why not meet our local agent.

We will end our little excursion as well as our adventure on this beautiful Asian island by taking our flight at Colombo International Airport.

Passport

To enter Sri Lanka, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your entry date into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada must obtain a Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization) before arriving in Sri Lanka. There is no visa exemption on arrival for a tourist stay.

The ETA can be obtained online via the official Sri Lankan government portal and allows a tourist stay of up to 30 days, with the possibility of extending your stay in the country up to a maximum of 90 days with the Sri Lankan Immigration Department.

Authorities may also request:

  • an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,

  • a confirmation of accommodation reservation.

Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Before your arrival, you must obtain a Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), issued by Sri Lankan authorities.

This electronic visa must be requested online on the official Sri Lankan government website. Required information includes:

  • passport information

  • flight and itinerary details

  • address of your first accommodation in Sri Lanka

  • personal information and contact details

The ETA is generally issued within a few hours to a few days. It is recommended to submit your application at least 48 hours before departure. The digital confirmation must be presented to immigration on arrival.

Health and Vaccinations

No vaccine is mandatory to enter Sri Lanka from the EEA, Switzerland or Canada. However, certain vaccinations are recommended by health authorities, particularly against:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B,

  • typhoid,

  • rabies (in case of risk activities or extended stay in rural areas).

Precautions against malaria and dengue may be recommended depending on the regions you visit. Consult a doctor or an international vaccination center before your departure.

Traveling with Children

Minors must have their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay and their own ETA.

In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, a territorial exit authorization may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Other Nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should check with the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
