Here you are in Nouvelle-Zélande! No need for a giant eagle to reach Middle-earth — a flight will do, and the magic of Tolkien won't take long to cast its spell.
A shuttle takes you to your accommodation in the city center, in Auckland. Nicknamed the "City of Sails", it is the largest city in the country, and also one of the most cosmopolitan, with a strong presence of Polynesian cultures.
Depending on your arrival time, you can discover Weta Workshop Unleashed (optional), an immersive experience created by the studios that made the costumes, sets and special effects of The Lord of the Rings. A fascinating first step into the world of fantasy cinema.
Starting tomorrow, you will follow the traces of Peter Jackson, the visionary director from here, who managed to transform New Zealand's landscapes into a true Middle-earth.

Night in Auckland.
From the Watchtower to the Shire
This morning, you pick up your rental car in Auckland city center (transfer to the depot not included), then head towards Rotorua via Matamata — a day rich in landscapes and legends awaits you.
Leaving Auckland, you take Highway 1 and cross the Bombay Hills. A detour to Port Waikato takes you in the footsteps of Amon Sûl, also called Windswept Mount. It is in these settings that Frodo, in The Fellowship of the Ring, receives the dreaded wound from the Morgul blade.
Rest assured: the place is far more peaceful than in the film! And unless you're traveling with an elf healer, it's best not to replay the scene…
Then continue to one of the highlights of this trip: a visit to Hobbiton village (2h30, included). Accompanied by a guide, you will stroll through the heart of the Shire, among perfectly reconstructed hobbit holes, including the famous Bag End. You'll pass under the shadow of the Party Tree before reaching the Green Dragon inn, where you'll enjoy a local beverage (beer, cider or non-alcoholic hobbit-style drink).

After this immersion in Middle-earth, you head to Rotorua (1 hour's drive). Although this city does not appear in the films, it is essential to discover the Maori culture and the unique geothermal activity of the region.

Heading to Mordor

After a restful night in Rotorua – between the warm waters of natural hot springs and the peaceful redwood forest – it's time for a change of scenery: heading towards the dark lands of Mordor!
Your day begins with a visit to the geothermal site of Wai o Tapu (entrance included), renowned for its bubbling pools, impressive geyser and supernatural colors, worthy of a fantasy film set.
You continue your journey via Taupo and its immense lake, before reaching one of the most emblematic locations of the saga: the Tongariro National Park. This park, the oldest in Nouvelle-Zélande, served as the backdrop for several major scenes from the trilogy. It is here that the fate of the Ring was sealed, in the flames of Mount Doom, embodied by the majestic Mount Ngauruhoe.
At every turn, the landscape transports you to the heart of Mordor: Sauron's realm, desolate lands, the cliffs of Emyn Muil, or the dreaded Mount Doom… it's all here.

Immersion in the Heart of Mordor
Today, let's explore the Tongariro National Park, a true natural setting for Mordor in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Among the many possible hikes, the most iconic remains the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Considered the most beautiful day hike in Nouvelle-Zélande, it will leave you speechless. Allow between 6 and 8 hours of walking (+800 m / -1200 m) through volcanic landscapes of rare intensity.
The trail takes you closest to two active volcanoes, skirts the slopes of Mount Ngauruhoe — also known as the Mountain of Destiny — crosses steaming craters (Red Crater) and overlooks high altitude lakes with striking colors (Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake) before descending into a peaceful native forest.
Faced with the menacing silhouette of Ngauruhoe, you can't help but imagine Sam and Frodo's path towards their destiny. But be warned: climbing the volcano is forbidden out of respect for Maori culture, with the peaks of Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu being sacred. As Gandalf would say: "You shall not pass!"
Alternatives to the alpine crossing
If you prefer a more accessible walk, explore the surroundings of Iwikau Village, where rocky landscapes are reminiscent of Mordor's battlefields. This is where the Second Age battle was filmed, visible in the trilogy's introduction.
You can also discover Tawhai Falls, setting of an iconic scene where Gollum fishes in a waterfall, huddled in his underground world.

Heading South, Direction Wellington
Tongariro National Park → Wellington
You leave this morning the volcanic lands of Tongariro to head towards the far south of the North Island. Gradually, the scenery changes: arid landscapes give way to lush hills, until you reach the Kapiti Coast before arriving at Wellington, nicknamed "the coolest little capital in the world".
Nouvelle-Zélande's capital is a must-see destination for any Lord of the Rings fan. Approximately 30% of the trilogy's scenes were filmed here, whether in studios or in the stunning natural settings surrounding the city.
This is where you'll find the famous Weta Workshop, where you'll discover the behind-the-scenes creation of the sets, costumes and iconic accessories from Peter Jackson's universe. The workshop tour (90 min, included) will immerse you in the world of fantasy cinema. Don't miss a visit to the Weta Cave, a museum-shop where you can admire life-size replicas, weapons, figurines and other collector's items. (The visit can also be arranged the next day depending on your schedule.)

In the footsteps of the community in Wellington
The most accessible filming location near Wellington is undoubtedly the wooded hill of Mount Victoria. Its Monterey pine forest served as the setting for several scenes from the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, notably the one marking the very first appearance of a Nazgûl, just before Frodo cries out to his friends: "Get off the road!"
Just outside the city, Harcourt Park was used to represent the gardens of Isengard, while Kaitoke Regional Park, even further away, served as the main setting for Rivendell, the city of the elves.
As an optional addition, 1 hour 45 minutes' drive from Wellington, head towards Cape Palliser and stop at the Putangirua Pinnacles, impressive rock formations. This is the setting where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli wander in search of the Army of the Dead, in the extended version of The Return of the King.
If you have a little time left, remember to visit the Te Papa museum, which is both fun and interactive.

Crossing to the South Island and drive to Motueka
Present yourself at Wellington ferry terminal at least one hour before departure, then board for a comfortable crossing of approximately 3h15 to the South Island.
Although the two islands are separated by only about twenty kilometres, the ferry first navigates around Wellington Bay, offering superb views of the capital, before crossing the Cook Strait and sailing through the splendid Marlborough Sounds.
Upon arrival, disembark in the village of Picton, where you resume your journey with your vehicle. Follow the scenic route via Havelock, famous for its green mussels, then stop at Pelorus Bridge, a filming location for the barrel riding scene in The Hobbit.
You then traverse a vast forestry region before reaching Nelson, a sunny beach resort renowned for its beaches, craftsmanship, wines, orchards and fishing port. Do not miss a visit to Jens Hansen jewellery, creator of the One Ring, open Monday to Friday (9am–5:30pm) and Saturday morning.
Free day in Abel Tasman National Park
Enjoy a relaxing or active day in the Abel Tasman National Park, famous for its golden sand beaches and postcard-worthy landscapes. It is also here that some settings from The Lord of the Rings were inspired, notably Dimrill Dale and Rivendell.
With its 22,500 hectares and 23 km long, Abel Tasman is the country's smallest national park — a striking contrast with the gigantic neighboring Kahurangi, twenty times larger! Yet it remains a true gem of the South Island, notably thanks to its famous Abel Tasman Coast Track, which runs along the coast through coves, orange beaches, rivers lined with native vegetation and rest areas ideal for observing seals.
This little paradise enjoys generous sunshine (over 2,500 hours per year), which increases your chances of exploring its wonders under a brilliant blue sky. The coastal trail, accessible to all, does not exceed 200 meters in altitude, even though the interior of the park reaches over 1,100 meters.

From Motueka to Punakaiki, heading for the wild coast

Today, you leave the peaceful beaches of the Abel Tasman region to reach the Wild West Coast, this wild coast squeezed between the New Zealand Alps and the Tasman Sea.
The road takes you along the Buller River and its spectacular gorges, until Westport. From there, a small detour takes you to Cape Foulwind, where you can observe a colony of sea lions in their natural habitat.
Continue then to Punakaiki, famous for its fascinating Pancake Rocks. These amazing rock formations, sculpted by marine erosion, resemble stacks of pancakes piled on top of each other.
💡 Expert tip At Tauranga Bay, go past the main observation platform and continue on foot for a few minutes: you will enjoy a superb panoramic view of the entire coast.
Heading to the Franz Josef Glaciers
You leave Punakaiki to continue south towards Franz Josef Glacier. Along the way, stop in Hokitika, a charming little town renowned for its jade workshops.
Take the opportunity to visit a pounamu (jade) workshop and do some shopping before heading back to the road towards the impressive Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, unique in the world for being so close to the sea at this latitude.
The mountains surrounding you are part of the majestic Southern Alps, made famous in The Return of the King. It was in these mountain ranges that the beacon fires were lit: "Gondor calls for aid! And Rohan will answer!"
💡 Expert tip The scene of the beacon fires lighting up along the White Mountains (Ered Nimrais) was filmed at Mount Gunn, very close to Franz Josef.
From glaciers to lakes: scenic route to Queenstown
Today, you take one of New Zealand's most beautiful roads. From Franz Josef, make your first stop at Fox Glacier, just 25 minutes to the south. Then take the road to Lake Matheson, famous for its perfect reflection of Mount Cook, the country's highest peak (3724 m). An easy 1.5-hour loop allows you to walk around it.
You then continue towards the Haast Pass, which marks the transition between the West Coast and the central Otago landscapes, with its majestic glacial lakes. Numerous viewpoints and short walks line this panoramic route, including the Blue Pools, with crystal-clear waters.
Arrival at Wanaka, a charming little town nestled on the shore of the lake of the same name. After a break in this peaceful setting, continue towards Queenstown via the Cardrona Valley, one of the country's highest roads (1040 m), which then descends to the shores of the vast Lake Wakatipu.
If time permits, take a detour by car to Deer Park Heights, filming location for several films, including The Two Towers by Peter Jackson, as well as Wolverine, Pete's Dragon, and Disney's The Rescue.

From Queenstown, drive along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, before crossing the vast green plains of Southland, populated by thousands of sheep. You arrive in Te Anau, a charming town nestled on the banks of the largest lake on the South Island, at the entrance to Fiordland National Park.

Te Anau is renowned for its glowworm caves accessible by boat, as well as for its water activities and fishing. The region is also the starting point for several famous hiking trails: the Kepler Track, the Routeburn Track, and the legendary Milford Track.
On the cinema side, Te Anau is home to part of the Fangorn Forest, where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are amazed to find Gandalf the White again, resurrected after his confrontation with the Balrog.
The Waiau River, which originates in Lake Te Anau, was used to represent the legendary Anduin River. You can spot it at various points along the Te Anau / Manapouri Highway.

From the lands of Fiordland to the battlefields of Gondor
You leave Te Anau for a long 4.5-hour drive towards Twizel, passing through the vineyards of Cromwell, then Omarama, before crossing the spectacular Lindis Pass, one of the country's most iconic mountain passes.
You finally reach Twizel, a small town born in 1968 during the construction of major hydroelectric dams. It is also an essential region for Lord of the Rings fans, as it served as the setting for many scenes from the trilogy, including the Battle of the Pelennor Fields – the largest and most impressive battle of the entire saga.

Exploration of Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Heart of Gondor

From Twizel, follow the road along the magnificent Lake Pukaki, whose turquoise waters hosted the settings of Esgaroth, also called Lake-town, in the Hobbit films. On clear days, you will spot Aoraki/Mt Cook, the country's highest peak (3724 m), surrounded by equally majestic summits.

Pelennor Fields & Minas Tirith
Access to the heart of the Pelennor Fields requires private permission, but a DOC-marked trail allows you to enjoy a clear view of these vast plains and the mountain ranges visible in the background of the film scenes.
Just 3 km from the village, you can also reach the exact location that served to represent Minas Tirith in the cinematic universe.
The Mt Cook village, at 760 m altitude, faces a breathtaking panorama. Take advantage to explore:

From Lake Tekapo to Christchurch, between lakes and gardens
On your way to Lake Tekapo, famous for its glacial lake with turquoise waters, set against the majestic backdrop of the Southern Alps. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the water's edge or relax in the village's thermal spa centre.
Then continue your journey to the village of Geraldine, before reaching Christchurch, the most British of New Zealand cities.
Located on the east coast of the South Island, Christchurch (Ōtautahi)* is the largest city on the island, with 380,000 inhabitants. Known as the Garden City, it captivates visitors with its many green spaces, multicultural charm and architecture blending modernity with Victorian style.
Among its main attractions: – a renowned botanical garden, – the Canterbury Museum (currently being renovated, but a small collection is visible at the COCA museum on Gloucester Street), – an art gallery, – the modern Turanga library, – numerous cafés and restaurants, – a historic tram, – the Avon River running through the city, – and a recent thermal spa centre with sea views.
The city centre, largely rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake, offers a modern, dynamic and pleasant atmosphere.

Oui, les ressortissants français doivent obtenir une autorisation NZeTA avant le départ (environ 17 NZD) + une taxe touristique IVL (35 NZD). Valable 2 ans, entrées multiples jusqu'à 90 jours par séjour. Passeport valide 3 mois après le départ prévu de Nouvelle-Zélande requis.
