The spirit of travel
The turquoise waters of Lake Khövsgöl mirror themselves in the morning silence while horses graze freely on its shores lined with larches. In the distance, the peaks of the Khangaï pierce through the mist, thousand-year-old guardians of this land where time seems suspended. The smell of yak dung fire and the guttural songs of herders accompany each sunrise in this preserved Mongolie.
The Amarbayasgalant monastery reveals its golden roofs nestled in the green valley, before the road winds towards the craters of Uran Togoo where ancient lava has given way to lush vegetation. At Terkhiin Tsagaan, the "great white lake," the volcanic formations of Khorgo testify to a tumultuous geological past, while the hot springs of Tsenkher invite contemplation. The Orkhon valley unveils its roaring waterfalls and meadows where horses gallop, leading to the ruins of Karakorum, the ancient capital of Gengis Khan.
This territory bears the memory of the great Mongol khans, heirs to the infinite steppes and masters of the equestrian art. Herding families perpetuate here the ancestral gestures of transhumance, pitching and dismantling their yurts to the rhythm of the seasons, keeping alive a nomadic culture that centuries have not altered. This journey through deep Mongolie reveals the soul of a people that has remained faithful to its pastoral traditions.

Around 6:00 PM, you attend a traditional Mongolian show at Tumen Ekh, renowned for its performances combining folk dances, traditional music, contortion acts and khoomi, the fascinating Mongolian throat singing inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage.

Departure for Amarbayasgalant Monastery
Discovery of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the country's main Buddhist center. Every morning, monks gather there for prayers in an atmosphere filled with serenity. This visit also allows you to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism and freely exchange with people on site.
You take the road towards the Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built in the 18th century in memory of the first Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar, who was at the head of Mongolian religion, it is considered one of the country's major monasteries. Located in the north of Selenge province, it benefits from a particularly remarkable setting.
On the way to the extinct volcanoes natural park
In the morning, you visit the Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built nearly 300 years ago, the complex stands out for its highly coherent architecture: a predominantly Chinese style, enriched with Mongolian and Tibetan influences. The complex follows a symmetrical layout, with the main buildings aligned along a north-south axis and secondary structures distributed along parallel axes.
Today, you can admire 28 buildings there, including a two-story temple measuring 32 m², still open for worship
You cross the wheat fields and large agricultural areas before arriving at Erdenet. This city is among the country's main economic centers and is home to a vast open-pit copper mine.
Erdenet → Parc national d'Uran Togoo
You take the road towards the natural park of the volcanoes of Uran Togoo. Uran Uul, an ancient volcano that was active 20 to 25 million years ago, today welcomes varied fauna and flora. The ancient lava flows have made the soils particularly fertile, offering a rich and pleasant environment to explore.

Arrival on the shores of Lake Khuvsgul
Parc national d'Uran Togoo → Murun
You set off on a hiking trip on the heights of Uran Uul to enjoy the panorama of this volcanic region. The trail crosses through woodland, among Siberian larches, before reaching the crater. Along the way, you observe a wide variety of plants as well as numerous birds and insects. At the bottom of the crater lies a small lake surrounded by dense vegetation.
Arrival at Khövsgöl Lake, one of the world's natural wonders. Imagine 2760 km2 of a mountain lake, with water so pure that you can drink it, and surrounded by a dozen peaks reaching over 2000 meters in altitude and covered with pine forests and lush meadows where yaks and horses graze!
You head east, towards the green valleys of Alag Sar, where you settle into a small ger camp located on the shores of the lake.

Hiking on the shores of Mongolia's great blue lake
Accompanied by local herders and their yaks, you set off for a day of hiking on foot or on horseback in the wooded valleys of Alag Tsar. At the gentle pace of the cart, you discover a land deeply connected to nomadism. In summer, the region is covered with flowers and it is not uncommon to walk through a carpet of edelweiss. To the west, on the opposite shore, peaks exceeding 3,000 meters are reflected in the clear waters of the lake.
In the evening, you set up the yurt with the herders, the one you transported during the day, and under which you will spend the night.
On the Way to the Central Steppes
You visit the site of the deer stones of Uushigiin Övör, a remarkable megalithic ensemble decorated with stones engraved with animal motifs.
You stop in Mörön to buy fresh food supplies at the market, then have lunch in town before resuming your journey.
Murun → Shine Ider
You take the road towards the centre of the country: the track crosses several passes and descends into isolated valleys where the landscapes change rapidly. The altitude exceeds 2,000 metres at the passes.
As you progress, the panoramas gain in diversity, inviting you to make multiple stops to enjoy the views and take some photographs.
Lakes and volcanoes region
Shine Ider → Parc national de Terkhiin Tsagaan
You head towards the Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur natural park located at 2,060 meters altitude. This lake, nicknamed "the great white lake", forms with the volcanic zone surrounding it an emblematic site of the Arkhangai province.
You spend the night with a nomadic family, in the mountainous part of the park.
Hiking on Khorgo Volcano
From Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur
You will hike along the shores of the lake, heading South-East towards the Khorgo volcano, which rises to 2,240 meters. You will climb it, an accessible and gradual ascent. From the summit, the view opens up onto the lake and the surrounding hills.
Near the volcano, the lava flows shape a unique landscape, contrasting with the environments encountered so far.

Relaxation at Tsenkher Hot Springs
Terkhin Tsagaan Nuur → Tsetserleg
You continue your journey through the heart of Arkhangai and discover vast steppes where many herding families live and yaks and other livestock graze. You stop in Tsetserleg, a small town nestled in a setting of mountains covered with larch trees.
On site, you replenish your supplies at the local market before visiting the Zayan Gegeen museum.
Tsetserleg → Sources chaudes de Tsenkher
You arrive at the Tsenkher hot springs, where you can relax in the hot water baths of the camp.
Nomadic Life in the Orkhon Valley
Sources chaudes de Tsenkher → Monastère de Tövkhön
You leave the road to join the tracks and fully enjoy the natural landscapes. The route runs along the Orkhon canyons and the green steppe where herds of nomadic families roam. You are then welcomed by a family of herders in the heart of the Orkhon Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
From Orkhon Valley
On the way, excursion to the Tövkhön monastery. The ascent of the Öndör Ulaan hill summit, accessible only on foot, leads to the Tovkhon hermitage, where Zanabazar, Mongolia's first religious leader, composed the Soyombo alphabet. Located at 2,312 m altitude, the site reveals a vast panorama over the Khangaï range. You enjoy a picnic in this exceptional setting, with the Orkhon valley below.
Return to your hosts' place and a stroll around the camp.
2-night stay with a nomadic herding family. You will discover the nomadic way of life and share their daily routine in all its simplicity. Depending on the season, you may be offered the opportunity to participate in animal milking, traditional dairy product making or even herding livestock on horseback.
(Activities subject to seasonality)
Visit to the Orkhon Falls
Orkhon Valley → Orkhon cascades
Those who wish can set off on a horseback ride along the Orkhon Valley from the camp to the Orkhon Falls.
For others, it is possible to reach the falls on a hike of approximately 6 km, or by vehicle according to your preferences.
Visit the Ulan Tsutgalaan waterfalls, where clear water cascades over dark stone, sometimes crossed by a ray of sunlight that creates an ephemeral rainbow. Standing 16 meters high, they were formed nearly 20,000 years ago, as a result of a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
At the end of the day, you attend the preparation of a Mongolian barbecue, then share this traditional meal with your hosts in a warm atmosphere.
Karakorum and Khogno Khan landscapes
Orkhon Valley → Kharkhorin
Route to Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongols. Founded in 1220 by Genghis Khan, this emblematic city was one of the major stops on the Silk Road. It was from Karakorum that the Mongol empire was administered until the capital was transferred to Beijing by Kublai Khan. Today, only a few remains of the capital survive, recalling the historical importance of this place marked by the passage of the great khans.
Visit of the Erdene Zuu monastery, built in 1586 by a nomadic prince. The complex, inspired by Chinese and Tibetan architecture, is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas, which testify to the spiritual importance of the site. The discovery continues at the Karakorum museum, dedicated to the history of the former capital and its region.
Departure for the splendid rock formations of Khögnö Khan . You discover a park with varied landscapes, between semi-desert steppes, taiga zones, granite massifs and a long band of sand of about 80 km, which earned it the nickname of " mini Gobi ".
Then, you hike to the Khambiin Khiid monastery. Perched in the mountains, this 17th-century monastery was built by Zanabazar in tribute to his spiritual master, the monk Erdene. The peaceful atmosphere that prevails there and the view of the surroundings make it a remarkable cultural and spiritual stop.

Elsen Tasarkhai and return to Ulaanbaatar
In the morning, enjoy a camel ride along the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes and discover the arid landscapes of the Bayan desert, characterized by the alternation of sand, steppe and rocky massifs.
You take the road back to Ulan Bator. Along the way, the last herds of horses crossing the road and the last yurts glimpsed in the distance accompany you to the outskirts of the capital.
You then arrive in the city center and settle into your hotel, where you can rest for a few moments.
The rest of the day is free. Accompanied by your guide, you explore the city's shops to make your last purchases and enjoy the atmosphere of Ulan Bator one last time.

Good comeback and until next time!
Breakfast at the hotel. The driver will take you to Ulan Bator international airport. The return transfer will take place at the time you wish, depending on your flight.
