Is Turkey a safe destination?

Turkey is generally safe for travelers in tourist areas such as Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Mediterranean coasts. Only the southeast near Syrian and Iraqi borders presents significant security risks.

Safe tourist areas

The main Turkish tourist destinations are considered safe: Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, Ankara and Izmir. These regions benefit from enhanced security presence and developed tourist infrastructure.

Precautions to take

  • Pickpocketing: remain vigilant in crowded places (Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet, public transport).
  • Demonstrations: avoid any public gathering and social unrest.
  • Tourist scams: be wary of persistent invitations in restaurants or shops.

Areas to absolutely avoid

Southeastern Turkey, particularly provinces bordering Syria and Iraq, presents risks of terrorism and armed conflicts. These areas are formally advised against by French authorities.
