What is the religion practiced in Thailand?

Theravada Buddhism is the main religion in Thailand, practiced by approximately 95% of the population. Islam represents 4.6% of believers, mainly in the south, and Catholicism has around 300,000 followers.

Buddhism, majority religion

The Theravada Buddhism largely dominates the Thai religious landscape since its introduction in the first centuries of our era. This branch of Buddhism structures daily life, traditions and the architecture of the kingdom. The temples (wat) punctuate the territory and monks dressed in saffron robes are an integral part of society.

Other faiths

  • Islam : 4.6% of the population, essentially concentrated in the southern provinces such as Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat
  • Catholicism : approximately 300,000 faithful spread across the entire territory
  • Other religions : Protestantism, Hinduism and Confucianism in the minority

To remember for the traveler

This religious diversity is reflected in the architecture and local festivities. Respect for Buddhist traditions (proper attire in temples, removing shoes) is essential when visiting cultural sites.
