What are the means of transport in Thailand?
In Thailand, you can travel by road (buses, tuk-tuks, taxis, songthaews), train (comfortable for long distances), boat (taxi boats in Bangkok, ferries to islands), and plane (low-cost airlines to cross the country quickly).
Road Transport
Thailand's good quality roads make it easy to connect cities. Buses are comfortable and well-equipped, but often over-air-conditioned — bring a sweater. Tuk-tuks (motorized tricycles) and songthaew (shared taxis) dominate in cities and on islands thanks to their affordable prices. Taxis offer the best price-comfort compromise.
Rail Network
Trains are suitable for long distances like Bangkok-Chiang Mai, avoiding the aches of bus travel. Moderate speed (40-45 km/h) and random punctuality, but three classes available: the first two with ventilation/air-conditioning, the third without. Some routes cross spectacular landscapes, notably Bangkok-Kanchanaburi.
River and Air Transport
In Bangkok, taxi boats are a better alternative to buses — a practical and economical network. To reach the islands, many companies offer comfortable ferries with shops on board.
Planes via low-cost airlines are essential for long journeys (Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Surat Thani, Chiang Mai-Phuket) at competitive prices.
