Paul Kagame has held the position of President of the Republic of Rwanda since April 2000. A former military leader of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), he played a decisive role in stopping the 1994 genocide against Tutsis.
His political career
Kagame was first vice-president and Minister of Defense from 1994 to 2000, before ascending to the presidency. He was re-elected in 2003, 2010 and 2017. A constitutional revision in 2015 theoretically allows him to remain in power until 2034.
