How to get around in Nepal?

In Nepal, the main transportation options are local buses (economical but uncomfortable), taxis (good value in cities), car rental with driver, and flights to remote destinations like Lukla. Bicycles and motorcycles are not recommended in Kathmandu.

Road transport

Local buses remain the most economical way to travel and allow you to connect with Nepali people, but comfort is not guaranteed. Tourist Buses, particularly the Greenline company, offer more comfort with air conditioning and meals included, at a higher price. Avoid overnight trips at all costs.

Taxis often represent the best option for the Kathmandu valley. Count on 50-100 rupees per kilometer (double at night) and always negotiate the price as meters are rarely used. Daily packages are available.

Car rental is generally done with a driver and often costs more than taxis.

To avoid

  • Bicycles in Kathmandu: strongly discouraged due to intense pollution. Acceptable in Pokhara and Sauraha.
  • Scooters and motorcycles: very dangerous due to chaotic traffic and lack of traffic rules.

Air transport

Flying becomes essential for certain destinations like Lukla or western Nepal. Favor the dry season as the monsoon regularly causes accidents. Flights are on small propeller planes with 15-20 seats.

To remember

Nepalese roads are in poor condition with frequent landslides and breakdowns. Arm yourself with patience for all land-based journeys.
