What language is spoken in Namibia?

The official language of Namibia has been English since independence in 1990. German and Afrikaans are also widely spoken, a legacy of colonial history. Many indigenous languages persist, notably the click languages characteristic of the San and Nama peoples.

English, the official language

English has been the official language of Namibia since independence in 1990. It is used in administration, education and business dealings. English-speaking travelers can therefore communicate easily in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants.

Other European languages

  • German: widely spoken, a remnant of German colonization (1884-1915). Present in commerce and certain communities.
  • Afrikaans: inherited from the South African period, still commonly used especially in the south of the country.

Indigenous languages

Namibia has many ancestral languages, including the fascinating click languages of the San (Bushmen) and Nama peoples. These languages use tongue-clicking sounds as consonants. There is also oshiwambo (spoken by 50% of the population), otjiherero and damara/nama.

Practical advice

In remote rural areas, English can be limited. A local guide facilitates exchanges with traditional communities, particularly for discovering San or Himba cultures.
