What type of government is in power in Mozambique?

Mozambique is a multiparty presidential republic. The president is elected by direct universal suffrage and holds executive power, while the Assembly of the Republic exercises legislative power.

Structure of the Mozambican Government

Mozambique operates according to a system of multiparty presidential republic since the 1990 Constitution. The President of the Republic, elected for a five-year term renewable once, combines the functions of Head of State and Head of Government.

The Three Powers

  • Executive Power: exercised by the President of the Republic and his Council of Ministers
  • Legislative Power: held by the Assembly of the Republic (250 deputies elected for 5 years)
  • Judicial Power: independent, with the Supreme Court at the top of the hierarchy

Multipartism

Several political parties participate in elections. FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front) and RENAMO (Mozambican National Resistance) are the two main political formations in the country since independence.
