How to get around in Mozambique?
In Mozambique, use buses and minibuses (chapas) for local journeys, domestic flights for long distances, and taxis or cars with drivers in cities. Car rental is possible but requires caution.
Local and regional transport
- Buses and minibuses (chapas) : economical solution for local and regional journeys. Chapas are ubiquitous and connect most cities.
- Taxis and chauffeur-driven cars : recommended in cities, especially in Maputo and Beira, for greater comfort and safety.
Long distances
Domestic flights : ideal for quickly connecting major destinations such as Maputo, Beira, Nampula and the islands of the Quirimbas archipelago. Several local companies operate these routes.
Car rental
Car rental is possible but requires caution. Main roads are in good condition, but some sections may be in poor condition, especially during the rainy season. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for exploring remote areas.
Local agency advice
For the islands (Bazaruto, Quirimbas), favor boat transfers or organized charter flights. Avoid driving at night outside major cities.
