Guatemala has more than 20 Mayan languages still spoken today. The most widespread include:
- Kaqchikel: spoken in the central highlands
- Q'eqchi': dominant in the north of the country
- Mam: present in the mountainous west
- Tzutujil: around Lake Atitlán
Practical advice for travelers
In tourist and urban areas, Spanish is more than sufficient. In remote villages in the highlands, a few greeting words in the local language (often Kaqchikel) are greatly appreciated by the locals.
