Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has held the presidency of Cuba since April 2019. Born in 1960, this electrical engineer by training climbed the ranks of the Cuban Communist Party before reaching the highest state positions.
An organized succession
Díaz-Canel was first appointed president of the Council of State in 2018, succeeding Raúl Castro. This transition was completed in 2019 with his election to the presidency of the Republic, in accordance with the new Cuban constitution adopted that same year.
