How to get around in Brazil?
In Brazil, flying is the most efficient way to cover long distances between regions. For shorter journeys, opt for buses—"ônibus" (3 comfort categories). In cities, metros and urban buses are well-developed, with reliable metered taxis.
Long-distance transport
Air travel remains essential for this continent-country. All major cities have well-served airports. Air passes allow discounted rates for multiple flights, often equivalent to long-distance bus prices.
Buses « ônibus » are the alternative for medium distances, with three comfort levels:
- Conventional: minimum comfort, no toilets
- Executivo: reclining seats and on-board toilets
- Leito: fully reclined seats with provided blanket
Urban transport
Public transport is excellent in major cities. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have efficient metro networks. Urban buses cover all cities, with tickets purchased directly from the driver.
Taxis are equipped with meters and are a safe option.
Car rental and precautions
Rental is possible with a European license, but driving can be dangerous. Opt for a local driver familiar with the roads and driving codes specific to the country.
