Discovering the volcano: Piton de la Fournaise!
Breakfast.
Early morning departure (recommended around 7:00-7:30 AM from your accommodation - bring sun protection: hat/cap + sunscreen + picnic supplies + approximately 2 liters of water per person + warm clothing) to discover the exceptional site of Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world! Along the way, you can stop at Nez de Bœuf, an impressive panoramic viewpoint over the Rivière des Remparts canyon, then you will discover Commerson Crater, a chasm 235 meters deep and 200 meters wide created by an ancient volcanic eruption. Before reaching the Pas de Bellecombe parking lot, you will cross the lunar and desert-like landscapes of the Plaine des Sables. From Pas de Bellecombe, magnificent panoramic views of the caldera and Dolomieu Crater, reaching an altitude of 2,631 meters.
Several hiking options are available to you:
The most popular: Ascent of Dolomieu Crater : from the Pas de Bellecombe parking lot, where you will have a magnificent viewpoint over the Volcano and its immense caldera, the trail begins with a descent within the enclosure by a steep staircase and continues through Formica Leo (crater dating from 1753, 2nd photo); you will then begin the ascent of Dolomieu Crater and walk across volcanic rock. Return via the same trail.
Average round-trip hiking time: 5 hours / difficulty level: moderate – difficult / Elevation gain: +/- 500 meters
Details: http://bit.ly/2jcjyzMThe shortest: Descent into the enclosure to Formica Leo : If you do not wish to undertake the full hike, you can in any case descend into the enclosure and observe a small crater nicknamed "Le Formica Leo". Ideal with young children.
Average round-trip hiking time: 1 hour / difficulty level: easy - moderate / Elevation gain: +/- 150 meters
The easiest along the ridges:
Hike to Piton de Bert : this easy hike will allow you to walk along the ridges and observe the crater by skirting it from the top of the enclosure. Please note that if you choose this hike, we recommend you first park at Pas de Bellecombe to observe this giant Piton de la Fournaise, then return by car and park at the next parking lot on your left (Piton de Bert trail parking) to start this hike.
Option to picnic when you reach Piton de Bert before returning to the parking lot.
Average round-trip hiking time: 3 hours 30 minutes / difficulty level: easy-moderate / Elevation gain: +/- 140 meters
Details: http://bit.ly/2jE7fQKNez Coupé of Ste Rose : this easy hike will also allow you to walk along the ridges but on the North – North/West face of the Volcano unlike the Piton de Bert route. It will take you through small groves of high altitude tamarin trees with some viewpoints over the enclosure throughout the walk. Option to picnic when you reach Nez Coupé before returning to Pas de Bellecombe.
Average round-trip hiking time: 3 hours 30 minutes / difficulty level: easy-moderate / Elevation gain: +/- 350 meters
