Cultural immersion in Togo

You are heading today towards Atakpamé, a city perched on a hill, in the heart of a region renowned for its coffee and cocoa cultivation. With Kpalimé and Badou, it forms the coffee-cocoa triangle of Togo, an important zone for the country's agricultural production. Once a mountainous refuge, Atakpamé gradually developed to become an agricultural and administrative center during the German colonial period. The city today retains a cultural heritage marked by its local traditions.

With a bit of luck, you will have the opportunity to witness a performance of the Tchébé dance, a traditional stilt dance emblematic of the region. This spectacle, rhythmed by the movements of the dancers, testifies to the richness of Togolese cultural expressions.

You also discover the central market of Atakpamé, set around the main square of the city. This meeting and exchange place comes alive particularly at nightfall, when music accompanies the activity of merchants and visitors.

You continue your discovery towards the Nangbéto dam, located near Atakpamé, where you can observe hippopotamuses in their natural environment. An opportunity to appreciate another facet of Togo's fauna.

After breakfast, you head out early toward the north of Togo. Your route passes through Kamina before reaching Sokodé, your destination for the day. Sokodé is one of the country's main cities and an important administrative center. It is home to a predominantly Kotokoli population, of Muslim tradition, whose clothing reflects certain influences from North Africa. Men wear large traditional boubous, while women combine veils with outfits in varied colors. The city is also distinguished by the richness of its musical and choreographic traditions, deeply rooted in local culture. During the knife festival, the streets of Sokodé come alive with traditional music and dance, testifying to the importance of these events in the cultural life of the region.

You continue your discovery with a visit to private homes housing the tombs of warriors, to which locals continue to make regular offerings. These places bear witness to the place accorded to ancestors and traditions in local beliefs.

In the evening, you attend a traditional celebration organized with the Tem population, marked by a fire dance. This moment of meeting and sharing allows you to discover a cultural expression characteristic of the Sokodé region.

Your day begins with a safari in the Sarakawa wildlife reserve, located near Kara. Created to preserve Togo's natural heritage, this reserve spans approximately 50,000 hectares and is home to various animal species. As you explore, you will be able to observe many birds around the water sources, as well as zebras, kobs and hartebeest. You continue your discovery in Kara, a rapidly expanding city that is an important stopover for exploring northern Togo. The region is notably inhabited by the Kabyé, one of the country's main ethnic groups, nicknamed the "stone farmers" due to their agricultural expertise on rocky terrain.

You discover the traditions of this community, whose agricultural activity is based notably on the cultivation of yams, cotton and peanuts, as well as the production of mangoes and other fruits. You also take an interest in their traditional habitat, the soukala, sets of huts surrounded by a boundary wall, where a patriarchal family lives.

Your immersion in Kabyé culture continues with the discovery of blacksmiths' work, who perpetuate a particular technique using large stones in place of hammers. You also meet women specialized in traditional pottery and initiate yourself into shaping clay pots, an opportunity to discover their craft skills.

Finally, you visit one of the colorful markets in the Kara region, where the aromas of food products and the scents of millet beer mingle. A discovery of local life, between traditions, craftsmanship and exchanges with the inhabitants.

Today you head toward the Savanes region, in northern Togo, to discover its landscapes and historical heritage.

Your exploration begins with a walk along a cliff, before reaching a large cave arranged into the rock face. This site shelters the remains of ancient constructions and clay granaries, witnesses to a significant period in local history.

Once, this cave served as a refuge for entire villages to escape slave raids. Its elevated location offered a privileged observation point over the surrounding savanna, allowing populations to monitor the surroundings and protect themselves. You also enjoy a panoramic view of the savanna landscapes, which extend at the foot of the cliffs.

You then continue your journey to Dapaong, located at the far north of Togo, where you reach your hotel to settle in.

This day is dedicated to your return to Lomé, capital of Togo, through the varied landscapes of Togo. Several stops punctuate your journey, allowing you to admire the natural landscapes of the country and enjoy once again the diversity of its regions. With a bit of luck, you will also have the opportunity to witness a traditional cultural event along the way. A moment of discovery punctuated by local music, which testifies to the richness of Togolese traditions. Upon your arrival in Lomé, you join your hotel located by the sea for your accommodation.

In the evening, you attend a cultural entertainment on the hotel's private beach. An opportunity to enjoy pleasant moments of conviviality and sharing, in a warm atmosphere, to the rhythm of local traditions.

This morning, you set off to discover Agbodrafo, a former Portuguese city located about thirty kilometers from Lomé, between Lake Togo and the Atlantic Ocean. Today peaceful, this small coastal town retains traces of a past deeply marked by the slave trade.

Once a slave port, Agbodrafo was part of the region historically known as the "Slave Coast". Several remains still bear witness to this painful period in Togo's history.

You will discover in particular the slave house, also called Woold Home, as well as the well of the chained, two places of memory linked to the trafficking of human beings.

This emotionally charged visit invites you to better understand this page of history and to grasp the measure of its legacy in local memory.

You return to Lomé, the Togolese capital, to enjoy your final moments in Togo. A rest period allows you to relax before spending some time on your last souvenir purchases and enjoying a few refreshments.
