Charm & CharacterRivers

A 1923 Palladian-style mansion on the western bank of the Chao Phraya in Bangkok, Praya Palazzo houses 15 rooms and is accessed by private longtail boat.

Praya Palazzo occupies a 1923 Palladian-style mansion set on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Following extensive renovations, the property opened as a hotel-restaurant in 2009, with just 15 rooms distributed throughout the historic building. Access is via the establishment's private longtail boat from a pier on the opposite bank.

Why stay here

Praya Palazzo appeals to travelers seeking a characterful address rather than a large urban hotel. Three elements set it apart: a century-old building restored in a rare Palladian style for Southeast Asia, a location directly on the Chao Phraya away from the bustle, and its intimate size (15 rooms) that ensures attentive service. The longtail boat crossing to reach the property is part of the experience.

Atmosphere

The interior preserves traditional Thai-style furnishings and décor in warm tones. The library, dedicated to Thai history, extends this atmosphere of a lived-in residence. Outside, the garden descends toward the river and the heated pool overlooks the water. Since the western bank is less urbanized than Bangkok proper, ambient noise is limited to the passing of boats on the Chao Phraya.

Rooms

The 15 rooms are divided into four categories: Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suite, and Chao Phraya Suite. Sizes range from 25 to 45 m². All are air-conditioned, equipped with Wi-Fi, television, and private bathrooms. Higher categories additionally feature a safe and a refrigerator. Several rooms offer direct views of the river.

Restaurant and services

The Praya Dining restaurant offers reimagined royal Thai cuisine, drawing from the historical repertoire of the Kingdom of Siam. A Western menu is also available. The hotel organizes Thai cooking classes led by the restaurant's chefs.

For events, two spaces are available:

  • River View Garden: riverside reception hall, accommodating up to 150 people, suitable for weddings.
  • Rom Pho: audiovisual-equipped room for meetings and seminars, accommodating up to 50 people.

The heated pool, library, and 24-hour reception complete the services.

Location and access

The hotel is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya, in the Bangplad district. Access is via private longtail boat from a pier on the opposite bank. Allow approximately 45 minutes of driving time from Suvarnabhumi International Airport depending on traffic, which can be heavy during peak hours.

What to see nearby

  • The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), accessible within minutes by boat.
  • Khao San Road, the vibrant artery of the backpacker district, on the opposite bank.
  • The Rajathiwas Temple, more low-key, in the Phra Athit area.
  • Riverside markets and taxi boat rides along the Chao Phraya.
