Khum Lanna
Khum Lanna
Rural lodge in the village of Phrao, 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai. Lanna architecture, rice paddies, cooking classes and immersion activities in northern Thailand.
Khum Lanna is a rural lodge set in the village of Phrao, approximately 90 minutes' drive north of Chiang Mai. The property focuses on immersion in the agricultural life of northern Thailand: rice farming, herbalism, traditional cuisine and textile crafts shape the stay.
Why stay here
The lodge's name echoes the Lanna kingdom, founded in the 13th century, with its name meaning "Land of a Million Rice Fields." This connection is more than mere decoration: the house's motto, "rice for life," translates concretely at the table. The varieties of rice cultivated by neighboring farmers are served in the restaurant, and several activities offered on-site showcase how rice farming structures local life.
The architecture draws inspiration from traditional northern Thai dwellings: elevated wooden structures, sloping roofs, wooden furnishings and locally woven textiles. It's a setting that aligns with the property's purpose, feeling more like a country home than a hotel.
Atmosphere
The valley is framed by wooded hillsides and the entire property moves to the rhythm of the surrounding fields. The shared spaces—terrace, outdoor pool, restaurant—overlook rice paddies and orchards. The atmosphere remains calm, without forced entertainment, making it ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful stopover after the bustle of Chiang Mai or before trekking in the north.

The lodge offers 10 ventilated rooms, divided into two categories.

King or twin beds. Private bathroom with shower and toiletries, electric fan, water bottles, bedside table with lamps.

Location
The lodge is located in the village of Phrao, in Chiang Mai Province, in northern Thailand. Allow approximately 1.5 hours' drive from Chiang Mai and its international airport, which is the most convenient arrival point.
Nearby attractions
- Wat Mae Hia, about 15 minutes' drive away
- Wat Ban Long, accessible on the same loop
- Si Lanna National Park, for hiking and forest scenery
The region also lends itself to day-long cycling excursions through neighboring villages, or longer stays by combining Khum Lanna with a stop in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.
Planning your trip
The dry season, from November to February, offers the most pleasant conditions for exploring northern Thailand. Rice paddies display their most vivid hues during monsoon season, between July and October, but rainfall can complicate some outings.
