The East, Andasibe, the Pangalanes Canal and Sainte Marie

Eastern Madagascar is characterized by thick vegetation with endemic fauna, beautiful water landscapes made of lakes and rivers, beautiful beaches, etc.

On the road from the capital to Andasibe (150 km, 3 h), we will start visiting Madagascar Exotic, a farm breeding chameleons, reptiles and endemic butterflies. As we arrive at Andasibe National Park, we will have a glimpse of the richness of the Eastern Rainforest: a dozen species of lemurs (this place is in an Indri-Indri sanctuary), chameleons, birds, orchids, medicinal plants, rare tree species (rosewood), etc.

Water landscapes begin in Manambato and its lake. We will also cross the famous Pangalanes Channel to reach Ankanin’ny Nofy (the dream nest), a village located on the shores of Lake Ampitabe. We will stop at Le Palmarium Nature Reserve to admire rare palm species, carnivorous plants, etc.

To reach Tamatave, we will take the waterway again, on the canal, discovering unforgettable scenes of life: local people taking bush boats (river taxis), smiling barge navigators who never fail to say hello, children playing on the banks…

An essential stopover in eastern Madagascar: Sainte-Marie Island, famous for its history related with pirates and for whale watching. To get there, we will reach Mahambo where we will cross the sea. Sainte-Marie is also known for its welcoming and warm population. On the program: mountain-bike rides or walks, visits to the pirate cemetery, sea excursions and water sports, diving, whale safaris (from June to September), etc.
