Early departure for the Maros region to explore, by motorized canoe, the impressive archaeological site of Rammang Rammang. The Leang-Leang caves have revealed traces of human presence dating back at least 5,000 years. The rock paintings in the Maros caves date back around 4,000 years. Return to Makassar in the afternoon.

Drive to Bira, located on the southern tip of the island. Along the way, visit traditional shipyards (mainly in Tanaberu). Renowned for building some of the finest wooden boats in Sulawesi—and likely all of Indonesia,local craftsmen still use ancestral techniques without any construction plans, relying solely on knowledge passed down through generations. The famous “pinisi” schooners (large cargo vessels) can reach over 30 meters and nearly 200 tons. Afternoon at leisure by the sea, and visit traditional Bugis houses where ikat weaving is practiced.

Early morning departure for Sengkang, located on the shores of Lake Tempe, a haven for hundreds of bird species (covering 350 km² but only about 5 meters deep). Visit rubber plantations along the way. In the afternoon, board a long motorized canoe to explore the lake’s rich ecosystem: dozens of egrets, herons, and other birds take flight as your boat glides through a fascinating aquatic landscape that seems to close behind you. Meet local fishermen who live year-round on bamboo floating houses (in August, you may witness the “Maccera Tappareng” festival, aimed at purifying the lake’s waters). Back in Sengkang, visit traditional silk weaving workshops.

Morning transfer to Lore Lindu National Park. Covering 2,290 km², this park is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Ranging from 200 m to 2,620 m in altitude, it hosts remarkable biodiversity. Beyond its 227 bird species, including the red-knobbed hornbill (the largest in the world), you may encounter the elusive anoa or the rare babirusa, as well as cuscus (tree-dwelling marsupials), giant civets, and three species of tarsiers (the smallest mammals on Earth).

The Togian Islands form an archipelago of 56 islands and islets, located 30 km south of the Equator in Tomini Bay. Born from volcanic activity, the islands are covered in tropical forest and surrounded by coral reefs. The average water temperature is 31°C, with underwater visibility reaching 40 to 50 meters. Both marine and terrestrial ecosystems remain untouched and pristine, an extremely rare condition. The coastline and reefs provide ideal habitats for unique wildlife such as turtles, dugongs, macaques, parrots, and babirusa wild pigs.
At the heart of this paradise, 37 villages thrive, representing diverse ethnic groups such as the Bobongko, Togian, Saluan, and the Bajau, known as sea nomads. Easy ascent of Mount Mahawu and discovery of its acidic crater lake (with superb views over Mount Lokon, the Minahasa region and the northern tip of Sulawesi). Descent and drive to Lake Tondano caldera. Visit of an “ikan mas” fish farm and lunch in a traditional restaurant by the lake. Return to Tomohon and ascent of the active Lokon volcano (approx. 1h30). In the middle of the night, start of the final ascent of the massive lava dome of Soputan (1,805 m). This volcano has shown strong activity since 2000 and is therefore closely monitored. Its activity is typical of stratovolcanoes: strombolian, plinian, with pyroclastic flows (lahars – mudflows – during the rainy season). Observation of the dome and sunrise over Lake Tondano caldera. The view stretches to Mount Klabat and Tangkoko volcano, including coral islands and Bunaken National Park. Descent and drive to Lake Tondano. This 30 km-long lake is of purely volcanic origin. Surrounded by rice fields, it is home to a local specialty, the “ikan mas”, a type of carp that can reach several dozen kilos. Lunch by the lake and transfer to Lake Linau, a sulfuric lake with striking green colors that change with the light. Return to the hotel and free late afternoon to enjoy its extraordinary garden.

Very early departure by perahu (local fishing boat) for a full-day trek in Tangkoko National Park (9,000 hectares) and its semi-active volcano (last eruption in 1880). This rainforest hike offers encounters with rich wildlife. Despite its small size, the park hosts exceptional biodiversity, including the world’s highest concentration of hornbills (including the rhinoceros hornbill), endemic black macaques and the fascinating nocturnal tarsier (the smallest mammal in the world), as well as the Maleo bird, which lays large eggs buried in volcanic ash. Return to Pulisan in the afternoon.
