This tour invites you to explore the fascinating culture of the Toraja people, also known as "The Mountain People."

In Sulawesi, the Toraja are renowned for their unique traditions and spectacular funeral ceremonies. Their distinctive boat-shaped houses and breathtaking rice terrace landscapes showcase a land rich in culture, sacred rituals, and natural beauty.

  • Welcome at Makassar airport and transfer to hotel.

  • In the afternoon, depending on your arrival time, visit the bustling fish market, a key spot in the city, as fish plays a vital role in Indonesian cuisine. Continue your exploration with a visit to the port of Paotere to admire the stunning traditional wooden schooners.

  • The day wraps up with a tour of Fort Rotterdam, originally built in 1545 by Raja Tunipalangga. Initially an earthen rampart called "Makassar," it was fortified with stone walls in 1634 under Sultan Alaudin's orders. The Dutch later captured it in 1667, renaming it "Rotterdam" after Speelman's birthplace. Now fully restored, the fort houses a small museum detailing its rich history.

  • In the morning, transfer to the Maros region ,once explored by Alfred Wallace, famous for its lush rice fields and dramatic karst peaks. Take a short walk through the area and explore a cave that dates back nearly 39,000 years, home to numerous ancient cave paintings. Your guide will then take you on a dugout canoe trip along a river, where you'll encounter various bird species.

    Meet the local people, who live in traditional stilt houses. Afterward, head to the seaside town of Pare Pare, and then journey up the Sa'Dan river towards the mountains, where breathtaking landscapes unfold.

    The flat terrain gives way to dense coconut forests as you continue your scenic drive.

    Stop at Bambapuang for a view of the striking "erotic" mountain before arriving in Rantepao, the capital of Toraja country, in the early evening.

  • Your first stop today is the Lemo burial site, where balconies are carved into a rock face, housing numerous figurines known as Tau Tau.

  • Then, transfer to the royal tombs of Suaya before continuing on foot to the fascinating Tampangg'alo site. In the afternoon, visit the Londa caves at the base of a large cliff, home to coffins and scattered bones.

  • Enjoy an easy hike to the village of Kete Kusu , renowned for its intricate wood carvings and rice granaries, as you pass through rice fields, villages, and bamboo forests. Along the way, you will also discover troglodytic tombs and ancient suspended tombs.

  • Note: the course of the three-day programme exploring Toraja country may be adapted if a funeral festival is taking place in the region at this time. Your guide will take you to attend this ceremony and introduce you to the family of the deceased. For your information, no rituals are organised in Toraja country for tourists: everything is absolutely authentic.

Day 4 A Journey Through Traditional Textile

Day 4 A Journey Through Traditional Textile

  • In the morning, visit the village of Bori, famous for its megaliths carved in the shape of tombs, then continue to Palawa, home to the largest megalithic site in the region, and finally Sa'dan, renowned for its traditional textiles.

  • Afterward, head to the wild north of the Toraja region, where you’ll be treated to magnificent panoramic views from 1,400 m above sea level. Enjoy an easy walk around Batutumonga, passing through rice fields, traditional villages, and bamboo forests.

  • In the afternoon, embark on a hike from Lokomata , where tombs have been carved into giant rock formations, to Mariri. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to meet local children returning from school and explore workshops where traditional cutlery is crafted.

Day 5 Vibrant Rantepao

  • Visit the vibrant Rantepao market, where many buffaloes and pigs are on sale. Then it's time to attend a funeral ceremony (see the above "Note").

    In the afternoon, transfer to Pemancar, where you begin a lovely walk towards Salu, through rice fields and plantations (mainly coffee and cocoa).

  • In the morning, we travel to the charming little town of Sengkang, which stretches along the banks of the Walanae river. Afterwards we board a traditionnal boat on the shores of Tempe Lake.

  • Morning transfer to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, located on the shores of the Makassar Strait. In the early afternoon, visit the bustling fish market—an essential hub of daily life and social exchange, as fish plays a central role in Indonesian culinary culture.

    Continue on to the port of Paotere to admire the magnificent traditional wooden schooners.

    End the day with a visit to Fort Rotterdam, originally built in 1545 by Raja Tunipalangga as a simple earthen wall known as “Makassar.” In 1634, the fortifications were reinforced with stone walls at the request of Sultan Alaudin. The fort was later conquered by the Dutch in 1667 and renamed “Rotterdam,” after the birthplace of Admiral Speelman. Today, the fort has been fully restored and houses a small museum showcasing its rich history.
