Sumatra: the secret valley

The Kerinci volcano region, often nicknamed "the secret valley of Sumatra", is a little gem just 6 hours by car from Padang.

Surrounded by the Kerinci-Seblat National Park, the largest in Sumatra (around 13,500 km2), the Kerinci valley is full of places still preserved from tourism.

The Kerinci-Seblat National Park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category "Heritage of the tropical rain forests of Sumatra".

  • Departure from Padang in the morning and drive to Sungai penuh. About 7 hours of driving. We will stay in a small guest house in the small village of Lolo Kecil, in the middle of orange plantations.

Day 2Hike to Kaco Lake

Day 2Hike to Kaco Lake

  • We go hiking to discover Lake Kaco, a magnificent small lake in the heart of the Kerinci Seblat National Park. About 3/4 hours of walking in the forest. Possibility of swimming or snorkeling at the lake. Picnic by the lake. Return at the end of the day to lolo Kecil and night in a guest house in the middle of the orange plantations.

Day 3Immersion in local culture

  • In the morning, we leave to visit the villages and the traditional market. We have lunch with the locals and in the afternoon we go to discover the cinnamon making process. The Kerinci region exports 80% of its cinnamon production worldwide. Night in a guest house in the middle of orange plantations.

Day 4Hiking in the forest

Day 4Hiking in the forest

  • Today we are going on a forest trek with a waterfall and hot springs. Picnic on site. Return to the small village of Lolo Kecil and night at a local’s home. Opportunity to help give English lessons with Netra, who teaches English to children and young people in the village.

Day 5Boating on Lingkat Lake

Day 5Boating on Lingkat Lake

  • In the morning we go to watch the coffee being made and can help as well as taste this excellent organic coffee. We have lunch there and in the afternoon, we leave for Lake Lingkat. Bamboo raft ride on the lake and barbecue dinner in the evening. Return to Lolo kecil and night at a local’s place.
