Trail along the escarpment with magnificent panoramic views of the valley below and the surrounding peaks up to the great Jinbar waterfall.

Progressive climb over the vast plateau through afro-alpine grassland and giant lobelias

Trail along the ridgeline and an impressive gorge.

Crossing a small valley then climbing to the summit of Inatye (4070 m), splendid viewpoint over the surroundings: plunging cliffs, deep valleys and small plateaus below.

Final descent following the ridges to the Chennek camp (3640 m).

Arrival in Lalibela, holy city of Éthiopie's Christians, listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Standing at 2500 m altitude, the small town of Lalibela constitutes the most important pilgrimage site in the country.

Discovery of the first architectural treasures of Lalibela, listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The churches were not built in a traditional manner, but carved into the rock in monolithic blocks.

Within these blocks, doors, windows, columns, different levels, roofs, … were then excavated. This titanic work was subsequently completed by a vast system of drainage ditches, trenches and passages for processions with, sometimes, openings leading to hermit caves or catacombs.

Lalibela, at the Dawn of Christianity

Depending on the liturgical calendar, possibility of attending a religious service early in the morning in one of the churches cradled by the singing of priests and marked by the rhythm of sistrums.

We continue our tour of the treasures of Lalibela. We visit the churches grouped in the southern section. This visit is an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the history of the building, enriched with miraculous stories deeply rooted in local culture.

We finally visit the most famous of the churches: The church of Beta Giorghis, a charming church with pink sandstone walls and in the shape of a cross.

In the evening, tasting of tedj, a kind of Éthiopian mead made from honey. Lalibela meaning "he whom the bees respect", Lalibela's tedj is highly renowned.

Trek to Meet the Communities of the Wollo Highlands

TREK: Lalibela (2630m) - Ad Medhane Alem (3500 m) Hiking time: approx. 6h

After just half an hour of walking, you leave the town and follow a rocky trail that crosses agricultural lands and forests with very beautiful viewpoints.

Further up, the trail crosses a massif of giant heathers (Erica arborea). These shrubs can become 5 meters tall trees and form a forest.

The trail climbs onto a narrow basalt ridge and onto a narrow plateau. Possibility of observing colonies of Gelada baboons, an endemic species or even the rarer «Netch Zinjaro» - Hamadryas baboon

Arriving at the Ad Medhane Alem site, perched on the edge of the escarpment at just over 3,500 m altitude, rewards you with a magnificent eastward view over the entire region.

Trek in Abuna Yosef National Park

TREK : Ad Medhane Alem (3500 m) - Small Zigit ( 4030m) – big Zigit (4300m) - Ad Medhane Alem (3500 m) Dist : approx. 25km ; Hiking time : approx. 8h

Early morning departure for a hiking trip to the summit of Abuna Yosef. After approximately 3 hours of walking, you reach the afro-alpine meadow where large tufts of Gwassa grass and giant Lobelias grow, as well as tree heathers on the slopes.

To start, you climb the smaller of the sharp Zigit peaks on the northwest side of the massif (4030 m). Between the two Zigit summits, you can observe basalt organ pipes.

From there, you can walk along the north slope of the mountains where large colonies of Gelada baboons are found (you can often see groups of up to 200 individuals).

You then reach the territory of the Abyssinian wolf, a rare endemic canid species. You may also observe the Lammergeier vulture.

The terrain gradually rises toward the summit before a steep climb for the last hundred meters or so.

Once you reach the 4300-meter summit, the panoramic view is breathtaking.

Passeport

Pour entrer en Éthiopie, votre passeport doit être valide au minimum six mois après la date d'entrée dans le pays et comporter au moins deux pages vierges pour les tampons d'immigration.
Le document doit être en bon état (pas de pages détériorées, déchirées ou modifiées).

Visa

Les ressortissants de l'Espace économique européen, de la Suisse et du Canada doivent obligatoirement disposer d'un visa pour entrer en Éthiopie. Il n'existe pas d'exemption de visa pour un séjour touristique.

Deux options principales sont disponibles :

  • le visa électronique (e-Visa), à demander en ligne avant le départ via le portail officiel des services d'immigration éthiopiens, pour une entrée par voie aérienne notamment à l'aéroport international d'Addis-Abeba ;

  • le visa à l'arrivée (visa on arrival), disponible à certains points d'entrée officiels, notamment à l'aéroport international Bole d'Addis-Abeba, sous réserve de modification des conditions d'accès.

Le visa touristique est généralement accordé pour un séjour jusqu'à 30 jours, avec possibilité de prolongation sur place auprès des services d'immigration éthiopiens.

Les autorités peuvent demander :

  • un billet de sortie du territoire (vol retour ou continuation),

  • une preuve de ressources financières suffisantes pour la durée du séjour,

  • une réservation d'hébergement pour la durée du séjour.

Santé et vaccinations

Aucun vaccin n'est obligatoire pour entrer en Éthiopie, sauf en cas d'arrivée depuis un pays à risque de fièvre jaune, auquel cas la preuve de vaccination contre la fièvre jaune (carte internationale de vaccination) est exigée à l'entrée.

Les vaccinations suivantes sont néanmoins fortement recommandées avant le départ :

  • fièvre jaune (selon les zones visitées),

  • hépatites A et B,

  • typhoïde,

  • méningite,

  • mise à jour des vaccins courants (tétanos, poliomyélite, rougeole).

Le paludisme est présent dans de nombreuses régions d'Éthiopie, notamment en dehors d'Addis-Abeba. Une prophylaxie antipaludéenne est fortement conseillée. Consultez votre médecin ou un centre de médecine des voyages avant le départ.

Voyage avec des enfants

Les mineurs doivent être titulaires de leur propre passeport valide et d'un visa individuel couvrant la durée du séjour.

Dans certains pays européens, lorsqu'un mineur voyage sans l'un de ses parents, une autorisation de sortie du territoire peut être exigée selon la réglementation du pays de résidence.

Les conditions d'entrée peuvent varier selon la nationalité. Les voyageurs concernés doivent se renseigner auprès de l'ambassade ou du consulat d'Éthiopie de leur pays de résidence.
