Praia and Cidade Velha, between history and heritage

Located on the south coast of the island of Santiago, Praia is the capital of Cap-Vert. An economic, political and cultural center of the country, the city blends heritage, beaches and local life.

During this first day, you first discover its historic center, the Plateau, during a walking tour through this cross-shaped neighborhood.

You will see the square, the church, the municipal market as well as the art street of Ponta Belém, before heading down through the Sukupura market.

You then head to Cidade Velha, located about twenty minutes from the capital. The first city built by the Portuguese in Africa, it is considered the cradle of Cap-Vert.

The historic center of Ribeira Grande, renamed Cidade Velha at the end of the 18th century, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009.

The site preserves a large part of its ruins and typical architecture, notably its stone walls and thatched roofs.

The visit continues with the Fort of São Filipe, located 100 meters above sea level. Built to protect the city from pirate attacks between the 16th and 17th centuries, it holds an important place in the site's history.

In Cidade Velha, you also discover the main monuments and remains, including:

  • The old cathedral

  • The Convent of São Francisco

  • The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário

  • The Banana street

  • The old slave market and its pillory.

The Boutique Hotel Praia Maria is located in a historic building in the city of Praia, close to the international airport. The establishment offers rooms near the beach, all equipped with a private bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and a flat-screen television. On site, you can enjoy breakfast each morning and make use of the common lounge to relax.

Fogo, in the heart of volcanic landscapes

PraiaPico de Fogo

6h140 km

Fogo, whose name means "fire", stands out for its conical volcano that rises to nearly 3,000 meters above the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of West Africa. Its landscape is marked by black volcanic sand beaches, lunar landscapes, coffee plantations and vineyards.

During this day, you embark on the discovery of Chã das Caldeiras, in an environment shaped by lava flows, from the oldest to the most recent, including notably from the 2014/2015 eruption, under the imposing presence of the volcano and the mountains that surround the caldera.

From Sao Filipe, you take the road passing through Forno and Patim until Achada Furna, a village built to resettle the inhabitants of Chã das Caldeiras after the 1995 eruption. The itinerary continues through Cabeça Fundo, where ancient craters are located, in a landscape marked by volcanism.

At the entrance to the natural park, a photo stop allows you to appreciate this lunar scenery, with a view of the island's highest point, Pico de Fogo, as well as the 2014 crater.

You then head to Portela, one of the villages covered by the 2014 lava flows and now rebuilt with restaurants, small guesthouses, houses and other structures.

Lunch is planned at a local restaurant, with the opportunity to taste the traditional wine of Chã das Caldeiras, called manecon.

Fogo, climbing the great volcano

During this day, you experience the ascent of Cap-Vert's highest peak, reaching 2,829 meters.

Throughout the climb, and at the summit, you enjoy an extensive view over Chã das Caldeiras and even over Santiago.

This hike also allows you to better understand the scale of the successive eruptions that shaped the landscape. Once at the summit, the atmosphere is marked by the smell of sulfur escaping from the center of the volcano.

The Pension Restaurante Christine & Irmãos is a small pension located on the island of Fogo, in Cidade dos Mosteiros, in Cap-Vert. It is one of the oldest pensions in the locality. The establishment has ten rooms in its main building, most of which are equipped with air conditioning and a television, and all with a fan. You will be able to dine at the on-site restaurant. Among the other services offered are luggage storage and transfer arrangements.

Fogo, between coffee plantations and local expertise

On the island of Fogo, the visit to the Mosteiros coffee plantations allows you to discover the culture of Fogo Coffee, cultivated on fertile volcanic soils. During this day, you explore the plantations installed on mountain slopes, where arabica coffee is produced in a traditional and largely organic manner.

This discovery highlights the methods of cultivation, harvesting and sometimes coffee processing, while emphasizing the historical, economic and cultural importance of this production for the region.

This immersion in local expertise is accompanied by natural landscapes and may, depending on the visits, include a coffee tasting.

Tarrafal, between panoramic roads and seaside

Located north of the island of Santiago, Tarrafal is a fishing port known for its beaches, its sheltered bay and its calm waters.

Surrounded by mountains and lush landscapes, the town also offers several discovery opportunities between coastline, historical heritage and local life.

During this day, you set off on a tour of the Island of Santiago heading towards Tarrafal. This excursion allows you to observe the landscape contrasts between Praia and the north of the island, between high mountains, plains and lush valleys.

The first stop is at São Domingos, with a visit to the Eco Centro. You then travel through different villages passing by Antónia peak, the highest point on the island.

At Assomada, an important trading center located 60 km from Praia, you discover the traditional market when the visit takes place on Wednesday or Saturday.

The itinerary continues through the Serra Malagueta region, marked by its eucalyptus forest, its acacias and its endemic plants, before arriving in Tarrafal.

Upon arrival at Tarrafal, you visit the former concentration camp, now transformed into a museum, then you head to the bay, bordered by palm trees, with its sea ideal for swimming.

Lunch is planned near the sea, followed by free time to enjoy the water.

You then continue towards the village of the Rabelados of Espinho Branco, a religious community that opposed society and the Church during the colonial era and has preserved its traditions. You can see and purchase handicraft items and paintings, while learning more about this culture.

Before returning to Praia, you travel along the coastline to discover small bays, caves and black sand beaches, with a stop in the region of Pedra Badejo.

The Tarrafal Alfândega Suites benefits from a location on Tarrafal beach and offers bay views, with shops, restaurants, taverns and beaches accessible on foot. The rooms and suites are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi connection, a seating area with television, a kitchenette and a private bathroom.
