Spiritual land, Tibet leads us not only to discover its Buddhist culture and its people rooted in tradition but also reveals to us the incredible beauty of its high plateaus, its imposing mountains with snow-capped peaks and its sacred lakes.
This 13-day circuit in Tibet takes you to the foot of the roof of the world, Mount Everest. But before that, we will immerse ourselves in Tibetan Buddhist culture with the visit of its most beautiful temples, palaces and monasteries. We will take the most beautiful roads through the mountains to reach its remote small villages and the highest monastery in the world, Rongphu monastery. Our Tibetan journey will end in Lhassa where we will discover the famous Potala Palace.

Day-by-day itinerary
Welcome to Tibet
Arrival in Chengdu, we make a quick stopover before flying to Lhassa, capital of the Tibetan kingdom.
Upon arrival in Lhassa, we are welcomed by our English-speaking guide who will accompany us throughout our stay in Tibet. We then head to Tsedang, a small high-altitude town located approximately 160 km from Lhassa. We drop off our belongings at the hotel.
Our first day continues with a visit to Yongbulakhang fort. The first palace built in Tibet, the monastery is perched on high ground offering a superb panorama of the surrounding area. Not very large, this former palace is covered with magnificent murals in vibrant colors.
Visit to Tsetang
This morning, we take the road to the Samyé monastery, the first Buddhist temple founded in Tibet. In a unique and serene atmosphere, the monastery surprises with its particular mandala shape. Within the monastery, we discover several buildings with Chinese, Tibetan and Indian styles.
Monastère De Samye → Changzhuzhen
In the afternoon, we head to the Traduk monastery located in the village of Changzhu near Tsetang. This small monastery was rebuilt in 1982 but has retained all the charm of the old.
On site, we will be able to admire the Indian thangka adorned with thousands of pearls.
The old city of Gyantse
After breakfast, we head to Gyantsé. Along the way we pass by the magnificent Yamdrok Lake, one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains reflected in its turquoise blue waters, the high-altitude lake extends over 638 km².
We then stop at the great Mindroling Monastery, one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The visit will allow us to discover its different halls where statues, relics and sacred texts are displayed.
We continue our journey through a fabulous landscape. We can observe a magnificent glacier.
We arrive in Gyantsé in the late afternoon. We take advantage of the last light of the day to climb to the Gyantsé Fort and enjoy the superb view over the valley and city. The Gyantsé Dzong holds many secrets of history concerning the Tibetan-British conflict and the British invasion in 1904.
The Pelkor Monastery
This morning, we depart to visit the Pelkor Monastery, and the old town of Gyantsé. The Pelkor Monastery is known throughout the country for its involvement in the history of Tibetan Buddhism but also for its impressive Kumbum.
We resume our journey to Shigatse. Along the way we make a stop to discover a Tsampa factory. We also stop for a brief visit to the charming village of Shalu and its monastery, dating from the 11th century. This temple benefited from restoration work in the 15th century with the support of the Mongol empire. It differs from Tibetan sanctuaries in its roof with Chinese influence featuring yellow and green tiles.
Discovering Shigatse
Today we set out to discover the market of Shigatse where fruit and vegetable stalls sit alongside small souvenir stands. We continue to the Tashilunpo Monastery, the traditional residence of the second spiritual leader of Tibet, the Panchen Lama. We discover the largest bronze statue in the world, built in 1904 for Maitreya the future Buddha.
After lunch, we set off for a short one-hour pilgrimage around the monastery before stopping at the local market
At the end of the day, we visit the summer palace of the panchen lamas, former residence of the second spiritual leader of Tibet, the Panchen Lama. Recently renovated, the palace offers a blend of tradition and modernity all in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
Then, in the evening, we continue with a visit to the Wordo Museum which houses a private collection from a former monk of Tashilunpo.
Rongphu, the highest monastery in the world
Shigatsé → Rongbuk
Today we take to the road for the Rongbuk monastery. The road taken is considered one of the highest in the world (with an average altitude of 5000 meters and passages at over 5200 meters).
Upon our arrival at Rongbuk, we settle into our guesthouse (very basic comfort, no sanitary facilities) before visiting the Rongphu monastery, the highest monastery in the world located at the foot of Everest. Its modest construction blends perfectly with the mountains as a backdrop. The monks on site strive to preserve all the authenticity of the place and will be delighted to show us the Guru Rimpoche cave if their availability allows.
The Buddhist School of Sakya
Rongbuk → Sakya (3800M)
This morning, we wake up early to admire the sunrise over Everest.
Then, head to Sakya for its school and monastery. Founded in 1073, the monastery houses one of the four main living schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The medieval Mongolian architecture of the monastery differs from that of the temples of Lhassa.
We then return to Shigatse.
On the way to Tibet's capital
Today, we return to Lhassa. We travel along the immense Brahmaputra River which is 2900 km long and flows through Tibet, India and Bangladesh. Along the way, we stop at an artisanal incense workshop.
In the afternoon, we visit the Sera Monastic University, which is still active. We meet monks and pilgrims there.
The Potala Monastery
This day leads us to the discovery of Lhassa. This morning we visit the famous Potala Palace and begin a walk (kora) around the palace in the company of Tibetan pilgrims. The Potala stands at the center of Lhassa on Marpori Hill. A true jewel of Tibetan Buddhism, it is both the religious and administrative fortress of Tibet.
We continue our visits with the Norbulingka, otherwise known as the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, this palace contains great cultural richness and magnificent gardens.
After lunch, we set out for the Jokhang Monastery, considered one of the most sacred temples of the Tibetans. An important pilgrimage site, we begin a walk around the monastery on the Barkhor path.
Excursion around Lhassa
We depart Ganden to discover its monastery located in the verdant valleys of the Lhassa region. The Ganden monastery is one of the three most important monasteries in Lhassa and many consider it the most beautiful.
In the afternoon, we visit the entire complex of Drak Yerpa caves, carved directly into the mountain and arranged into small lodges. The Drak Yerpa monastery is located at an altitude of 4885 meters, and it has become one of the four main meditation sites in Tibet.

Passeport
Pour entrer en Chine, votre passeport doit être valide au minimum six mois après la date d'entrée dans le pays et comporter au moins deux pages vierges pour les tampons d'immigration.
Le document doit être en bon état (pas de pages détériorées, déchirées ou modifiées).
Séjour touristique sans visa
La Chine a étendu son programme d'exemption de visa unilatérale à de nombreux pays. Les ressortissants de la plupart des pays de l'Espace économique européen, ainsi que de la Suisse, bénéficient d'une exemption de visa pour les séjours touristiques. Les ressortissants canadiens, quant à eux, sont également éligibles à cette exemption depuis l'élargissement récent du programme.
À ce jour, cette exemption permet un séjour pouvant aller jusqu'à 15 jours lors de l'entrée sur le territoire, dans le cadre d'un transit ou d'un séjour touristique. La durée exacte et les conditions peuvent varier selon la nationalité ; il convient de vérifier les dispositions applicables à votre passeport avant le départ.
Les autorités peuvent également demander :
un billet de sortie du territoire (vol retour ou continuation),
une preuve de réservation d'hébergement pour la durée du séjour,
une preuve de ressources financières suffisantes.
Visa touristique (type L)
Pour les voyageurs ne bénéficiant pas de l'exemption de visa, ou souhaitant effectuer un séjour de plus longue durée, il est nécessaire d'obtenir un visa touristique de type L auprès de l'ambassade ou du consulat de Chine compétent avant le départ.
Le dossier de demande comprend généralement :
le formulaire de demande de visa dûment complété,
une photo d'identité récente conforme aux exigences,
le passeport original valide,
les justificatifs de réservation de vol et d'hébergement,
tout document attestant des ressources financières suffisantes.
Les délais de traitement peuvent varier ; il est recommandé d'effectuer la demande plusieurs semaines avant le départ.
Carte d'enregistrement d'entrée
À l'arrivée sur le territoire chinois, les voyageurs étrangers doivent remplir une carte d'enregistrement d'entrée remise à bord de l'avion ou disponible aux postes frontières. Ce document est à présenter aux services d'immigration lors du passage au contrôle des passeports.
Par ailleurs, tout étranger séjournant en Chine doit s'enregistrer auprès des autorités locales dans les 24 heures suivant son arrivée :
dans un hôtel, l'enregistrement est effectué automatiquement par l'établissement,
en cas d'hébergement chez un particulier, le voyageur doit se présenter au bureau de police local pour effectuer cet enregistrement.
Santé et vaccinations
Aucun vaccin n'est obligatoire pour entrer en Chine pour les voyageurs en provenance de l'EEE, de la Suisse ou du Canada. Cependant, certaines vaccinations sont recommandées selon les régions visitées et la durée du séjour :
hépatites A et B,
typhoïde,
encéphalite japonaise (pour les séjours en zones rurales),
rage (pour les séjours prolongés ou aventuriers).
Il est conseillé de consulter un médecin ou un centre de vaccination internationale au moins quatre à six semaines avant le départ.
Voyage avec des enfants
Les mineurs doivent être titulaires de leur propre passeport valide couvrant la durée du séjour.
Dans certains pays européens, lorsqu'un mineur voyage sans l'un de ses parents, une autorisation de sortie du territoire peut être exigée selon la réglementation du pays de résidence.
Autres nationalités
Les conditions d'entrée peuvent varier selon la nationalité. Les voyageurs concernés doivent se renseigner auprès de l'ambassade ou du consulat de Chine de leur pays de résidence.
