What language is spoken in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two official languages: Sinhala and Tamil. English is the administrative and commercial lingua franca, widely spoken in tourism and hotels. English proficiency is sufficient to communicate with Sri Lankans.

Official Languages

Sri Lanka recognizes two official languages: Sinhala (spoken by the majority of the population) and Tamil (spoken by the Tamil minority, approximately 15% of the inhabitants).

English as a Language of Communication

English occupies a special position in Sri Lanka. Described as a "link language" by the Constitution, it serves in:

  • Public administration
  • Higher education
  • Commerce and tourism
  • Major hotels (menus, prices, instructions)

This predominance of English greatly facilitates exchanges for English-speaking travelers.

French in Sri Lanka

Although French has not yet gained recognition, the number of students enrolled in French courses is growing. This development could facilitate future exchanges, but English remains currently essential.
