What is the climate in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has an equatorial climate with two distinct seasons: a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to March. The monsoon affects different regions differently depending on the periods.

The two main seasons

Sri Lanka experiences an equatorial climate modulated by altitude and monsoons, with two distinct seasons:

  • Rainy season (May-October): the first showers begin in May on the west and south coasts (Colombo, Negombo, Galle). The north and east coast remain relatively spared between May and August.
  • Dry season (November-March): return of fine weather on the west and south coasts from November onwards. January to April offer maximum sunshine with temperatures stabilized around 30°C on the coast.

Regional specificities

The particular configuration of the island creates microclimates. While the south coast is rained on during the rainy season, the north and east benefit from milder conditions. Conversely, the dry season favors the west and south, but is not optimal for discovering the north and east.

To remember

In mountainous areas, expect significant temperature variations between day and night, even during the hot season. Waves can become dangerous during monsoon season due to sea currents.
