The spirit of travel

Explore the Saloum Delta in a gentle and responsible way. Between mangrove, bolongs and shell islands, you discover a territory shaped by water and salt, conducive to bird watching and local encounters. Your base camp: Les Barracudas ecolodge in Sokone, integrated into its environment, powered by a hybrid solar power plant, with an attentive team that prioritizes listening, safety and quality exchanges.

As you navigate in a pirogue, you glide through a network of channels lined with mangrove trees. Stops on discreet beaches invite you to take your time: swimming, observing fiddler crabs, simple and tasty barbecue. Away from the water, walks on foot, by kayak or mountain bike allow you to appreciate the tranquility of the bolongs, while visiting villages like Bambougar opens the door to moments of sharing with women's groups. Depending on the season, the Luma (weekly markets) offer a vivid glimpse of the region's agricultural and craft practices.

This "slow travel" journey limits travel and favors local modes of transport, for a progressive discovery of Saloum. You enjoy full board focused on local produce, and careful logistics, from Dakar ↔ Sokone transfer to activities led by guides rooted in the territory. As an option, a safari to Fathala reserve completes the nature experience.

With your local agency, you travel at a respectful pace, as close as possible to the Saloum landscapes and Sénégal's Teranga. An ideal trip for those who wish to reconnect with nature, meet, understand and leave with simple and meaningful memories.

From Dakar to Saloum: Foundiougne and Sokone, gentle immersion in an ecolodge

DakarSokone

SokoneDelta Du Saloum

20min10 km

At 9am, you depart from Dakar (or from Mbour, Saly, Somone) via the new motorway towards Mbour, then continue in the direction of Sine-Saloum via Fatick and its salt marshes. You reach Foundiougne, a former colonial prefecture, to cross the Saloum river by ferry; depending on schedules, the crossing can be done by canoe.

Lunch is taken in the shade of a thatched hut, on the riverbank, in a simple and peaceful setting.

The road continues towards Sokone, gateway to the Saloum Park. You stay at the Barracudas, an ecolodge built on a shell island with views over the mangrove. Electricity comes from a hybrid solar power station (panels and batteries), supplemented by a generator dedicated to refrigeration production. Your huts, scattered throughout a tree-filled park, each have a large bed and two small beds, separate toilets, a bathroom with hot water, a ceiling fan, lighting and a socket for charging your phone or camera; air conditioning available at an additional cost.

In the late afternoon, you enjoy free time to swim in the pool overlooking the mangrove or relax on the beach-terrace by the bolong.

The evening begins with a welcome aperitif on the panoramic terrace, followed by dinner prepared by Lamine, the Chef.

The night unfolds in the peace of the bush, sometimes punctuated by the distant cry of a hyena. Throughout the day, our local team ensures your comfort, encourages respectful encounters and is committed to responsible organization serving the inhabitants and landscapes of Saloum.

It is also possible to go out for 2 hours in the early morning or at the end of the day for a kayaking, mountain biking or hiking trip.

A visit to the village of Bambougar can be organized to meet a representative of the women's group and exchange about local activities. Our team remains at your service and ensures smooth, respectful organization of the local inhabitants and natural environments.

Islands and Bolongs of the Saloum: A Gentle Immersion in the Heart of the Mangrove

You embark in a pirogue for a full day in nature in the Saloum Delta National Park, classified as a World Biosphere Reserve.

The route winds through a maze of bolongs bordered by mangroves, where the atmosphere evokes a sense of "Amazonian adventure". As you navigate the meanders, you sometimes encounter oyster gatherers in the mangroves or a fishing pirogue, then observe the wildlife that animates the mangrove. On a deserted beach, a "Robinson Crusoe" barbecue is prepared; the afternoon continues in the shade listening to the birds, with a swim in the bolong or a walk in search of fiddler crabs.

The return to the Barracudas takes place in mid-afternoon; with a bit of luck, you may spot a pod of humpback dolphins, a species typical of brackish waters.

The end of the day invites you to relax by the pool.

In the evening, Lamine offers you a carefully prepared meal. Throughout this stage, our English-speaking local team ensures your comfort, encourages respectful encounters and is committed to responsible organization in order to enhance the islands, bolongs and communities of the Saloum.

Sokone and Luma of the Saloum: morning immersion, then road to Dakar or Mbour

Delta Du SaloumSokone

20min10 km

For this last morning in the heart of the Saloum, you experience respectful immersion in local life.

Depending on the calendar, you join Sokone to attend mass (Sundays only), a lively and colorful moment that highlights the singing and devotion of the community. You continue to one of the traditional weekly markets (Luma) in the region — such as Touba Mouride on Sundays or another Luma depending on the day — to feel the energy of exchanges: merchants, farmers, market gardeners and fishermen gather there to offer their products and harvests. It is a simple opportunity to observe daily practices and to speak with those who bring these territories to life.

You then return to the Barracudas for a late lunch, before heading to Dakar or Mbour. Our English-speaking team ensures logistical coordination and ensures respect for local customs, to conclude this stay in a spirit of authenticity, listening and professionalism.

The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and Canada traveling to Senegal for a tourist stay. Since entry rules may change, we recommend verifying the information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter Senegal, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after the date of entry into the country and must have at least one blank page for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).

Tourist stay without visa

Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada benefit from a visa exemption for tourist stays in Senegal.

This exemption allows a stay of up to 90 days from the date of entry into the country. Beyond this period, an extension or residence permit must be requested from the competent Senegalese authorities.

The authorities may also request:

  • an exit ticket from the country (return flight or onward connection),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of the stay,

  • an accommodation address in Senegal.

Vaccination record – Yellow fever

Presentation of a valid international vaccination certificate is mandatory upon entry to Senegal. Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers over 9 months of age, regardless of their origin.

This official WHO document must be presented to immigration services on arrival. If not provided, the authorities may refuse entry to the country or require vaccination on-site.

Furthermore, it is strongly recommended to consult a doctor or international vaccination center before departure to assess the need for other vaccinations (hepatitis A and B, typhoid, meningitis, rabies) and antimalarial prophylaxis, as malaria is present throughout Senegal.

Traveling with children

Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay.

In some European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the country may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence. It is advisable to carry this document as well as the child's birth certificate.

Other nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire at the embassy or consulate of Senegal in their country of residence.
