"Small Budget and Big Adventures" offers you a 14-day self-drive tour between Christchurch and Auckland, a perfect compromise between discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Aotearoa, comfort and controlled budget. The itinerary combines nights in hotels, motels, and "flashbackers" (superior backpackers) in double or twin rooms with private bathrooms, and a unique experience staying with locals.
This route takes you through both islands of Nouvelle-Zélande, with included excursions, such as a visit to the Wai o Tapu geothermal park, a Maori cultural evening accompanied by a hangi dinner, as well as an immersion in the kiwi conservation program at the National Kiwi Hatchery. Furthermore, a day on Waiheke Island with ferry and Hop on Hop off bus pass will allow you to discover the vineyards and beautiful beaches of the island.

Welcome to Christchurch!
Your adventure begins as soon as you arrive in Christchurch with a shared shuttle transfer that will take you comfortably to your hotel, right in the heart of the city.
Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island with 380,000 inhabitants, unfolds on the east coast, between lush nature and Victorian charm. Nicknamed the "Garden City", it captivates with its numerous green spaces and unique multicultural atmosphere.
The city is full of treasures to discover: the magnificent botanical gardens, the art gallery, welcoming restaurants and cafés, a picturesque tramway, not to mention the Avon River that runs through the city, adding a touch of serenity to the scenery.
Depending on your arrival time, take the opportunity to explore the city centre, entirely reinvented after the 2011 earthquake. The city perfectly combines modernity and history, offering a new and pleasant atmosphere.

On the way to Kaikoura: marine wildlife and breathtaking landscapes
This morning, you pick up your rental car before heading towards Kaikōura.
Take State Highway 1, heading north, crossing the Canterbury Plains and the Waipara vineyards. After approximately 150 km of driving, the sea reveals itself on the horizon. Along this jagged coastline, you will likely have the opportunity to spot seals and perhaps even dolphins, often visible near the coasts. If you feel like it, a boat trip departing from Kaikoura will allow you to observe them more closely, or even swim with them!
Upon arrival at Kaikoura, a charming town between sea and mountains, you will discover a place famous for the presence of sperm whales that swim in its underwater canyon. Kaikoura is also renowned for its delicious crayfish!
Don't miss the peninsula visit, ideal for observing seals, or the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway hike for breathtaking views.

From Kaikoura to Picton: beaches, vineyards and harbour atmosphere
Enjoy more time in Kaikōura before heading north, following the ocean for many kilometres. This coast offers magnificent panoramas and spectacular viewpoints, before arriving at Blenheim, Nouvelle-Zélande's wine capital.
After approximately 35 minutes of driving, you arrive at Picton, a small dynamic port town, where ferries connecting the North Island to the South Island set the rhythm of local life.

Discovery of Picton: hiking, vineyards and marine wildlife
A former whaling port, Picton charms with its unique character, nestled between verdant hills and the calm waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. Its harbor welcomes ferries from Wellington, bringing life to this small port town.
One of the trails not to be missed is the Tirohanga Track, a 45-minute hike through magnificent forest, offering spectacular views of Picton, Waikawa and the Marlborough Sounds. You can choose to retrace your steps or descend on the other side to return to Picton via its charming streets.
For hiking enthusiasts, it is also possible to take a boat to explore the Marlborough Sounds and enjoy several walks on the Queen Charlotte Track (not included).
Other options are available to you: a bike ride through the region's vineyards or a cruise to observe dolphins, or even swim with them!
Cruise to Wellington: Culture and breathtaking landscapes
Embark from Picton for a 3.5-hour cruise to the North Island. Cross the peaceful Queen Charlotte Sound and Cook Strait before arriving at Wellington, Nouvelle-Zélande's cultural capital, surrounded by hills. Onboard the ferry, enjoy the comfort of lounges, restaurants and observation decks to admire the landscapes.
Wellington, nicknamed "the world's coolest little capital" and "Windy Wellington", spreads around a harbor and climbs steep mountains. For breathtaking views, take time to reach the summit of Mount Victoria.
The lively city center is ideal for a walking tour, with its restaurants, cafés and galleries. Don't miss must-sees such as Parliament, the Te Papa museum, and the botanical garden.

From Wellington to Mangaweka: on the road of volcanoes and puns
Leave Wellington along the Kapiti coast on State Highway 1, then continue your journey to Levin and Bulls, before heading towards the volcano region of the Tongariro National Park.
Bulls is a town where humour reigns supreme: each local business and even municipal services play on puns. The police station is called "Const-a-bull", the church "Forgive-a-bull", and the medical centre "Cure-a-bull". The town hall is "Social-a-bull", the tourist information centre "Inform-a-bull", and even the public toilets are called "Reliev-a-bull". The town even has a very fitting twin town: Cowes, in England!
Continuing on your journey, turn off at Mangaweka to take the Parapara Road which will lead you to Mairenui farm. The perfect opportunity to meet Kiwis and chat about rugby and French cuisine.

From Taihape to Tongariro: Between Volcanoes and Breathtaking Landscapes
Mangaweka → Tongariro National Park
Take the main SH1 road north to Taihape, capital of… the rubber boot! After visiting Waiouru, which is home to the National Army Museum, you enter the Tongariro National Park, dominated by three majestic volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. This national park is one of the most spectacular places in Nouvelle-Zélande.
Spanning 80,000 hectares, the Tongariro National Park features an incredible variety of volcanic wonders: emerald lakes, ancient lava flows, smoking craters, colourful silica terraces and alpine gardens. A breathtaking natural setting with stunning beauty and diversity!
If you don't have the time or physical fitness required to complete the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike (6 to 8 hours of walking), we will suggest other equally magnificent walks.
From Taupo to Rotorua: nature, relaxation and Maori culture
Tongariro National Park → Rotorua
After crossing the desert region surrounding the volcanoes, the landscape gradually transforms into a sea of native forests, while the brilliant blue of New Zealand's largest lake, the Lake Taupo, stretches out before you. A lake even larger than Lake Geneva.
Taupo, nicknamed the world capital of trout fishing, is a dynamic town where many activities are offered, whether on land or on the lake, in every season.
Upon arriving in Taupo, do not miss a stop at the Huka Falls, an impressive spectacle with its colossal flow. Then, continue your exploration by visiting the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal park, a remarkable place with splendid colors (included).
After this immersion in nature, you continue your journey to Rotorua, an iconic thermal town and a Maori cultural center.

Rotorua: Maori culture, geothermal activity and relaxation
Rotorua, a true center of Maori culture, captivates with its thermal activity and its lake, a caldera whose last eruption dates back 25,000 years. You find yourself here in one of the most active geothermal sites in the world!
The city offers many opportunities to discover Maori culture. You can explore the city on foot, from the lakeside to the Government Gardens, passing through the Maori village of Ohinemutu, or opt for a relaxing walk through the redwood forest.
Surrounded by lakes, mountains, volcanoes and forests, the region is a true playground for outdoor enthusiasts: mountain biking, rafting, summer sledding… And after a full day, enjoy the hot water pools to unwind.
On today's agenda, a visit to the Kiwi National Hatchery, a conservation center dedicated to Nouvelle-Zélande's most emblematic bird: the kiwi!
In the evening, experience a unique experience at Te Puia, where a captivating show will immerse you in Maori culture. Songs, dances (including the famous haka) and legends will enrich this unforgettable immersion.
Heading to the Coromandel Peninsula: beaches and spectacular landscapes
Rotorua → Coromandel Peninsula
Head to the Coromandel Peninsula, a place where dense forests, breathtaking coastlines and white sand beaches blend harmoniously.
Take a break in Waihi to admire the spectacular viewpoint over the gold mine before continuing your journey to Hahei, where you will discover the famous Hot Water Beach. At low tide, this unique beach allows you to dig your own bathtub in the sand, thanks to the natural hot springs that flow there.

Exploration of the Coromandel Peninsula: nature and outdoor activities
The Coromandel Peninsula, located approximately 50 km east of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf, is a sparsely populated region made up of a few picturesque villages. Its rugged and hilly landscape, with its temperate rainforests, attracts many visitors, particularly Aucklanders who own holiday homes here.
The peninsula is ideal for lovers of outdoor activities: yachting, scuba diving, sea fishing, hiking, kayaking… And of course, swimming on its magnificent sandy beaches. Take the time to explore this region and find "your" corner of paradise.
During your stay, don't miss a boat trip or kayaking to the spectacular Cathedral Cove, or enjoy a stroll on Hot Water Beach and its natural hot springs (remember to check the tide times before you go).
Auckland
Coromandel Peninsula → Auckland
Two options are available to you to reach Auckland:
The first option involves taking a scenic route passing through the charming village of Coromandel, formerly frequented by gold prospectors. The road to Thames is particularly beautiful, especially when the pohutukawas (these small native trees with red pompom-shaped flowers) are in bloom, usually between December and January. Allow approximately 4 hours of driving, not counting photo stops along the way.
The second option allows you to reach Auckland more directly, via Thames and the interior of the peninsula. Allow approximately 3 hours of driving.
As you approach Auckland, traffic becomes denser, and you will see the Skytower (nicknamed "the syringe") rising into the sky in the distance.
Take advantage of this time to discover some must-sees of the city, either the same day or two days later, depending on your flight time: climb to the top of Mount Eden, a former volcano offering panoramic views of the city, explore the city museum, stroll through the old Parnell district, or take a pleasant walk by the ocean at Mission Bay to the marina, an emblematic venue of the America's Cup. You can also cross the bridge to explore the Devonport district, with its two peaks offering superb views of the bay.
At the end of the day, drop off your rental car in the city center, then enjoy downtown Auckland, which is easy to explore on foot.

Nicknamed the "City of Sails", Auckland is the largest city in Nouvelle-Zélande, often considered the capital of Polynesia due to its large population of Pacific origin.
To end your vacation in style, we invite you to spend your last day on the peaceful Waiheke Island. Just 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland, this island is famous for its world-renowned vineyards. Upon arrival, take the Hop on Hop off bus to discover the island's main points of interest at your own pace.
Beyond its exceptional wines, Waiheke invites you to enjoy its relaxed atmosphere, with numerous hiking trails and idyllic beaches.
At the end of the day, return to Auckland with one of the many ferries available until the evening.

Passport
To enter New Zealand, your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay and contain at least one blank page for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).
Tourist stay without a visa
Nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada benefit from a visa exemption for tourist stays.
To date, this exemption allows a stay of up to 90 days within a 12-month period.
The authorities may also request:
an exit ticket from the territory (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.
NZeTA Travel Authorization
Before your arrival, you must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authorization (NZeTA), issued by the New Zealand Immigration authorities.
This authorization is required even without a visa and must be obtained before boarding your flight. It is electronically linked to your passport. During your application, you will also need to pay the International Visitor Levy (IVL).
To submit your application, you will need the following information:

address of your first accommodation in New Zealand
The NZeTA application must be submitted online or via the official app at least 72 hours before departure. A digital confirmation will be sent via email and may be requested when passing through immigration.
Strict health and customs rules
New Zealand applies particularly stringent phytosanitary and customs controls upon arrival. It is prohibited or strictly regulated to bring in many food products, plants, animal products, or outdoor equipment (hiking boots, camping gear, etc.).
Any item subject to declaration must be declared on the arrival card. Non-compliance with these rules can result in heavy fines.
Travel with children
Minors must hold their own valid passport as well as an individual NZeTA covering the duration of the stay.
In certain European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the territory may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence.
Other nationalities
Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Affected travelers should inquire with the New Zealand embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
